⚖️ This vs. That: Bookkeeping vs. Advisory edition

What’s the difference?

📒 Bookkeeping looks back. It’s reconciled accounts, accurate financial reporting, and clean books that keep you current and ready for tax season.

📈 Advisory looks ahead. It’s budgets, forecasts, and trend analysis that help you plan cash flow and make confident decisions about growth.

💡 Pro tip: Business owners usually want to jump straight to the advisory piece. But your plans are only as good as the numbers behind them, so the bookkeeping data in your QuickBooks Online needs to be accurate first.

We follow a proven approach to get your books cleaned up, and then we start planning for the future together. When you work with Slate Ridge, you get the whole package.

Let’s talk about business seasonality.

If you own a small business, there is a good chance you already know this feeling. Some months are booming. Others are quiet. That’s seasonality, and it’s completely normal.
What matters is how you plan for it.

Here are three ways to manage seasonality from a financial standpoint:
🔵 Identify your trends. Most business owners already have a gut feeling about their slow periods. Good financial data backs that up. Look at your revenue by month and quarter over the last two to three years. Let the numbers confirm what you already suspect.
🔵 Know your period costs. These are the costs that don’t go away when business slows down. Salaries, rent, utilities, subscriptions. The lights stay on whether you’re busy or not. Know exactly what that number is every single month.
🔵 Plan your float in advance. Once you know your slow season and your fixed costs, you can plan ahead. How will you cover those period costs during a downturn? The time to answer that question is months before the downturn hits, not during it.

Every business is different. Your variables, your margins, your cycles are unique to you. This is a starting point, not a one size fits all prescription.

But the businesses that weather slow seasons well? They planned for them.

One of the most common questions we get. Should I hire a bookkeeper? When? And is it actually worth it?

Let’s talk about it.

Here’s what a bookkeeper actually does. They take the financial side of your business off your plate. They manage and maintain your books, keep them clean and compliance ready, perform reconciliations, and give you a real, accurate picture of your financial performance.

But here’s the real question. Why does that matter?
Ask yourself this:
🔵 Do you ever want to get a loan or secure outside funding?
🔵 Do you ever want to sell your business?
🔵 Do you dread tax season every single year?
🔵 Are you having trouble covering payroll?
🔵 Do you feel like clients are slow paying but you can’t actually confirm it with data?

If you said yes to any of those, that’s your answer.

Clean books aren’t just an administrative task. They’re what every single one of those goals depends on. And the longer you wait, the more expensive and time consuming the cleanup becomes.

Our recommendation? Don’t wait for a problem to force your hand. Secure a knowledgeable bookkeeper now, before you need one.

Most small business owners are running on operational mode. And that makes sense. Day to day demands are relentless.

But here’s what the data says. Nearly 4 in 5 small businesses say long-term planning is difficult. And only 35% have a formal growth plan in place.

That’s the gap we help close.

There are three levels of organizational management:
🔵 Strategic. Thinking 2+ years ahead. Where is this business going?
🔵 Tactical. Planning 1-2 years out. What do we need to do now to get there?
🔵 Operational. The day to day. Keeping things running.

Your financials aren’t just a record of what happened. They’re a roadmap for what’s next. At Slate Ridge, we help you see all three levels clearly.

At Slate Ridge, we have four core values. One of them is “Act for Others.”

In practice, that means speaking up even when it’s uncomfortable, doing the right thing even when it’s not the popular choice, and always prioritizing long-term relationships over short-term gain.

We implemented this value intentionally. Because we believe the standard a firm sets for itself is the same standard that carries through to the clients they serve.

Most small business owners don’t think about internal controls until something goes wrong.

Here’s a framework worth knowing.

When it comes to your financial cycles, there are four pillars that keep things clean, auditable, and protected from fraud:
🔵 Authorization. Who has the power to approve transactions? It should never be just one person.
🔵 Segregation of duties. The person who records the transaction should not be the same person who approves it or handles the cash.
🔵 Custody. Who physically controls the assets? Access should be limited and documented.
🔵 Record keeping. Every transaction needs a paper trail. If it isn’t documented, it didn’t happen.

Now, we know what you’re thinking. “I only have a few people on my team.” That’s actually when this matters most. If full segregation isn’t possible, start here. Get a second set of eyes on reconciliations and document your approval process. It’s not perfect, but it closes the biggest gaps.

These aren’t just audit checkboxes. They’re the difference between a business that can scale and one that is vulnerable.

⏰ September 15 is a big day on the tax calendar.

Two deadlines hit at once:

📋 Partnership and S-Corp extended returns are due.
If you filed an extension in March, time is up.

💵 Q3 estimated tax payments are due.
Self-employed and pass-through entity owners — this one’s yours.
Missing either of these means penalties and interest on top of what you already owe. Not a fun way to end Q3.

Here’s what you need before the 15th:
✅ Extended return filed and submitted
✅ Q3 books reconciled and current
✅ Estimated payment calculated and paid

If your books aren’t current — that’s exactly what we’re here for.
DM me “Sept 15” and let’s get you sorted before the deadline.
