Taxes are always changing 💰 and while these changes won’t affect how you file in April, they may affect your financial decisions in 2023. Here are the biggest changes:

✅ Federal income tax brackets will increase, allowing taxpayers to shield more of their hard-earned income from taxation. You can find your new tax bracket here: https://www.cnbc.com/2022/10/19/irs-here-are-the-new-income-tax-brackets-for-2023.html
✅ The standard deduction is increasing for both married couples filing jointly and single taxpayers.
✅ The new IRS limit for FSA contributions for 2023 is $3,050, an increase of 7% from 2022’s threshold of $2,850.

Let me help ease the most stressful time of the year: tax season! Right now you should be prepping your documents, so let’s go over the 6 things we need to file for you.

✏️ Income statements – to show how much you made from your job or business.
✏️ Other income statements – for income like investments or Social Security payments.
✏️ Tax deduction records – to claim deductions like charitable donations or mortgage interest.
✏️ Expense receipts – to claim deductions like medical bills, educational expenses, or charitable donations.
✏️ Personal info – full name and SSN (or TIN) for you, your spouse, and your dependents.
✏️ A copy of your last tax return – to help us see what changes there will be this year.

Once you have these all rounded up, we’ll take it from there! If you have any questions or aren’t certain about a specific form, don’t hesitate to email or call.

Believe it or not, we’re already preparing for tax season 😲 As you enjoy the new year, here are a couple things you can do to get ready, too:

✅ Gather your tax forms. You’ll start receiving them in the mail soon, so set aside a special place for them. If you get any documents digitally, set up a specific file on your computer to store them.

✅ Review your prior year's return. If you have a different accountant preparing your return this year, send them a copy so they can review the return and ensure no documentation is missing.

✅ Schedule an appointment. Tax season appointments fill up very quickly, so don’t wait until the last minute!

If you’re looking for accounting assistance this spring, we’d be happy to help. Give us a call or send our team an email, and we’ll get the ball rolling!

We don’t know if you’ve heard, but 🎅 is carrying something a little extra in his bag this year, with a cold front set to drop air straight from the North Pole (yes, really!) into much of the lower 48.

To help you and your family prepare for frosted window panes (and potentially power lines), we’ve compiled a few helpful prep tips:

🥶 Stock the pantry … and not just with bread or milk. Try to stock your pantry with nonperishable food sure to keep if the power goes out.

🥶 If possible, try to salt your driveway and sidewalk before any precipitation hits. And keep in mind that nearly one million people are injured from falls on ice and snow each year, so always tread carefully when snow/ice hits!

🥶 If you use a space heater, never leave children/pets alone in a room with it, ensure it’s not damaged before turning it on, check your carbon monoxide monitors, and always turn it off before bed.

🥶 In temperatures 13 degrees to 31 degrees Fahrenheit, try to head indoors every 20 to 30 minutes. If the wind chill is 13 degrees or lower, your best bet is to stay inside.

Have any other prep tips handy? Share them in the comments below!

Did you know small businesses have a higher chance of being audited than individuals do?

Though still only 2.5% of small businesses are audited compared to 1% of individuals, no one wants to be among those 2.5%.

Here are four steps you can take to decrease your chances:

✔️ File on time and file completely.
✔️ Report your numbers accurately and exactly.
✔️ Pay your estimated taxes on time throughout the year.
✔️ Stay away from misclassifying workers.

Got questions? Give us a call or send us an email. And be sure to share this post and spread the word to small businesses in your network!

Important reminder 🔔 Tax deadlines are coming up soon! December 31st is the last day to:

✔️ Take required minimum distributions (RMDs) if you’re 72 years or older
✔️ Convert a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA for the 2022 tax year without a waiver or extension
✔️ Make contributions to your employer-sponsored 401(k) plan for the 2022 tax year (as a general rule – check for exceptions)
✔️ Sell non-qualified securities for a gain or loss
✔️ Make charitable contributions that may qualify for a federal income tax deduction

We know this stuff can be confusing - drop us a line if there’s anything we can help with.
