You may be surprised to find out that the history of accounting is as old as the history of the written word.
Check this out:
The first ever written records date back to more than 5000 years ago, in ancient Egypt and Sumer. The earliest of the Sumerian records were cuneiform writing etched into soft clay tablets, which were then baked until hardened.
So were they writing about ancient mystic secrets? Perhaps it was poetry, or the details of a long forgotten religious ritual?
Well, guess again. As it turns out, the oldest written records ever discovered were a sort of financial account, detailing who owned what: from property, sheep, cattle, to wheat and more.
It just goes to show how important it is to practice good bookkeeping ;)
