You may be surprised to find out that the history of accounting is as old as the history of the written word.

Check this out:

The first ever written records date back to more than 5000 years ago, in ancient Egypt and Sumer. The earliest of the Sumerian records were cuneiform writing etched into soft clay tablets, which were then baked until hardened.

So were they writing about ancient mystic secrets? Perhaps it was poetry, or the details of a long forgotten religious ritual?

Well, guess again. As it turns out, the oldest written records ever discovered were a sort of financial account, detailing who owned what: from property, sheep, cattle, to wheat and more.

It just goes to show how important it is to practice good bookkeeping ;)

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!

This is THE golden rule, but not the golden rule of accounting.

In fact, there are three golden rules to accounting:

1. Debit the receiver and credit the giver.
2. Debit what comes in and credit what goes out.
3. Debit expenses and losses, credit income and gains.

Are there any rules you would like to see added to this list?

We are sticklers for doing it right ;)

Accounting is a tradition as old as money itself.

The earliest recorded evidence of accounting can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia, and is closely related to the development of modern writing, counting, and money!

Even the ancient Babylonians and Egyptians were performing audits – those pyramids must have cost a fortune to build…

So you may not be surprised to hear that by the time of the Roman Empire, the government had access to detailed financial information.

But modern accounting got its start with the writings of one man, Luca Pacioli, hailing from Italy. He was the first person to publish a book on double-entry bookkeeping, introducing his ideas to the Italian people. As a result, he is referred to as the “father of accounting and bookkeeping”.

The official profession of chartered accountant actually originated in Scotland in the 1800s. Solicitors would often employ accountants to offer their services to clients. The first organized institute of modern accounting was formed in England in 1880, with the creation of the “institute of chartered accountants in England and Wales”

And from there, the rest is history!

For many, tax season is a nightmare – digging up old records, doing unnecessarily complex mathematics, trying to remember what this was and what that was…

So naturally, you start to wonder what you can do to make things go more smoothly this tax season.

The first answer is to hire an accountant, but they need you to provide the necessary financial information in order to make your dollars work best for you.

Here’s a big tip for throughout the year: make detailed receipts of all your business transactions – and keep them in an organized folder!

But there is so much more that can be done. For example, you’ll want to keep a close eye on your receivables.

When you issue an invoice, you record a receivable. This means you log that the customer owes you money.

All too often, however, one may forget to apply the change to the invoice after getting paid.

We get it – you are excited to put some dough in your pocket!

But if you are not updating every invoice as it happens, you can begin to get behind on your books, resulting in time wasted and mistakes made when tax time comes around.

And this can cost you big money in the long run!
