Once a year at renewal, twice if they call you... that's not enough in our view.

A few ways to fix it:

Monthly emails with something useful in them
Customer events at your premises, or down the pub!
A simple phone call to check in
Loyalty offers for the regulars

Doubling the number of transactions per customer is the easiest of the six numbers to shift. They already like you so give them more reasons to come back.

The more you tell them, the more you sell.

A few questions worth asking:

What premium products could you offer?
What new lines could sit alongside the old ones?
Could you, and should you, raise your prices?

Doubling the average sale per customer over 12 months is a number most family businesses overlook. Put it on the wall and start measuring it.

There's a simple way to grow your business over the next 12 months. Start with the customers you actually want.

Define your ideal customer first... the ones who pay on time, value what you do, and come back for more.

Then become a sharp shooter and target only them.

If you sell to consumers, work out where they spend their time. Facebook ads, Google PPC, leaflet drops, lumpy mail through the door (we appreciate old school methods too!). Pick the route that puts you in front of the right people.

Doubling your ideal customers in 12 months is a real target that can be achieved, it just takes focus.

Does telling your story mean making it all about you? Do customers actually care?

In Episode 6 of Meet the Author, Paul and Susan Payton tackle this head on. Susan is the author of The Business of Stories, and she's heard this objection plenty of times.

As Susan puts it, the mistake some business owners make is talking about their awards, their qualifications, and all the amazing things they've done. That can be a turn-off. Sharing your story is about giving people a feel for who you are, what makes you tick, what you stand for, and if you're a good fit for them.

Back in 2014, Susan learned this the hard way. She had a Facebook community of 1,500 women but nobody was buying her coaching. Then she shared her honest, personal story with the group. Within two weeks she had six paying clients.

A good succession plan takes time, it needs the right tax planning, the right legal structure, and clear rolesโ€ฆ and it needs steady conversations, not crisis meetings. Starting early gives you control.
