New IRS Portal for Reporting Fraud and Scams

The IRS has launched a new portal that makes it easier to report instances of tax fraud, identity theft, IRS impersonation and other tax-related scams. On the new webpage (link below), people and businesses can report:

- Fake IRS phone calls, emails, and text and social media messages. Scammers posing as government agents often threaten people with arrest unless they submit immediate payments, often in a specific format like gift cards. The IRS does not operate in this way.
- Suspected tax fraud, such as tax evasion schemes or illegal use of offshore accounts.
- Identity theft, which should always be reported to the IRS immediately, even if other government and law enforcement agencies know about the crime.
- Suspicious tax preparation practices, such as a paid tax preparer refusing to sign your return or altering your income figures.

Citizen reporting often plays a critical role in catching scammers and bringing them to justice. This new system makes the process of filing a report less confusing and much more convenient.

Over the next week, we're going to be covering 5️⃣ of the most common IRS notices we see.

If you want to know exactly what these notices mean (and how you need to respond), lock in.

Let's kick off the series with CP12: the notice you get when the IRS has made a change to your tax return that affects your refund of tax due.

Sharing some HUGE news about charitable deductions ↓

In past years, charitable contributions used to only help taxpayers who itemized (aka didn't take the standard deduction) on their tax return.

But starting in 2026, taxpayers who take the standard deduction can ALSO deduct certain charitable contributions.

How much?

If you're single → up to $1,000.

If you're married filing jointly → up to $2,000.

This deduction generally applies to cash donations made to qualifying charities only. Gifts to individuals do NOT count.

The LAST thing we're asking you to do is sign over all your legal rights. 📝

The reason we may need a Power of Attorney from you isn't for legal control; it's to get your authorization to talk to the IRS on your behalf!

Tax POAs can be limited to a specific tax period or tax form. It does NOT give us broad access to your affairs. 🙅

Why a POA? Instead of sitting around waiting on speaker phone when you call the IRS, we can just handle it all for you!

You can also revoke a tax POA at any time by naming a new representative or by submitting a written revocation statement to the IRS.

Today's topic is the Qualified Business Income deduction (QBI for short).

It's this not-so-little tax deduction of up to 20% of your QBI.

But here's why it's tricky ↓

It's not as simple as "my business made $100k, so I'll deduct $20k."

There are income thresholds and limitations to how much you can deduct based on the type of business you run.

And to optimize your deduction, you may need to play around with how much you pay yourself or contribute to retirement accounts.

Because of the complexity of this deduction, plus how beneficial it can be from a tax perspective, we always touch on QBI optimization for our business clients in our tax planning meetings.
