Dear Valued Clients,
Starting with tax year 2023, the IRS is requiring business owners to electronically file 1099's if they have 10 or more to report.
We will be utilizing Quickbooks to file the 1099's electronically and will need to pass along the additional cost that is associated with this to the business owners depending on the # of forms required to be filed.
The IRS has a free E-file system that you can do on your own as well. to learn more. Visit: https://www.irs.gov/filing/e-file-forms-1099-with-iris #:~:text=10%20or%20more%20returns%3A%20E,Returns%20Intake%20System%20(IRIS
On November 21, 2023 the IRS announced that they will be a delay in reporting for electronic payments on Form 1099-K for payments made via venmo, cash app, paypal etc. This will not be a requirement until 2024 and they have raised the threshold from payments greater than $600 to $5,000.
For 2023, reporting will not be required unless the taxpayer receives over $20,000 and has more than 200 transactions.
Reporting requirements do not apply to personal transactions such as birthday or holiday gifts, sharing the cost of a car ride or meal, or paying a family member or another for a household bill. These payments are not taxable and should not be reported on Form 1099-K.
However, the casual sale of goods and services, including selling used personal items like clothing, furniture and other household items for a loss, could generate a Form 1099-K for many people, even if the seller has no tax liability from those sales.
Please note, Form 1099-NEC and Form 1099-Misc are due to the IRS by January 31, 2024.
Electronically file any Form 1099 for free with the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS). Individual and bulk forms. File direct through the taxpayer portal or use software through IRIS Application to Application.
