If you file your taxes by mail or send a check to the IRS, be aware of changes at the US Postal Service.

Mail isn’t always postmarked when you drop it off. The IRS looks at the postmark date to decide whether a return or payment was submitted on time. To guarantee proof of mailing, taxpayers should ask for a manual postmark at the post office. Other choices include using certified or registered mail, obtaining a certificate of mailing, or using a postage validation imprint.
