31% more Gen Z adults came to us for help with debt this year, according to our new 2026 data.

For a lot of young adults, the math just isn’t working. Rent is high, a car payment is often a must, and everyday costs keep climbing. Their average debt is still lower than any other generation’s, but it rose 10.5% in just one year.

The earlier you ask for help, the more options you usually have. See what else our new data shows about debt by generation: https://hubs.la/Q04BFTb70

Income up 44%. Debt up 55%.

That’s the average MMI client since 2019, and it’s why so many people feel like they’re running on a treadmill. You work. You get a raise. And it vanishes, because everything costs more.

One woman told her MMI counselor that her $75,000 income used to cover her expenses. Now it’s not enough to live on.

Have you ever asked ChatGPT for money advice? You’re far from the only one. A lot of people are using AI to sort out budgets and debt, and it can be a good place to start organizing your thoughts.

Just be careful what you share. Never give AI account numbers or other sensitive details. And for the final plan, as our Jonathan Wolfsohn told WSOC-TV, “There is no real substitute for the judgment [a human has].”

More people are filing for bankruptcy. Nonbusiness filings are up 11% over the past year. As our consumer finance analyst Ted Rossman told Boston 25 News, “A lot of this is just the cumulative weight of year after year of higher prices, higher interest rates.”

If you’re feeling that weight, it helps to know all your options before making a big decision. A credit counselor can walk through your budget with you and explain what might work for your situation, from a repayment plan to bankruptcy.

More individuals and families are filing for bankruptcy. Nonbusiness bankruptcy filings in the US increased 11% over the past year, reaching 594,000 for the 12-month period ending in September.

Nearly 1 in 5 households fell behind on a debt payment last year, as groceries, utilities, and everyday bills keep climbing. If that’s you, it doesn’t mean you did something wrong, because a job loss, a medical bill, or prices outrunning your paycheck can happen to anyone. Often the hardest part is just saying it out loud, and that first conversation can make everything feel a little lighter:

STRUGGLING WITH DEBT? Nearly 13% of credit card balances are at least 90 days past due, according to data cited from the New York Fed. Here's how to get help:

Holiday spending is expected to top $1 trillion this year for the first time. But as our consumer finance analyst Ted Rossman told azfamily 3TV CBS 5, a lot of that spending is coming from higher-income households, while many families are already carrying more debt.

So if your budget looks different from the headlines, that’s normal. Start with a realistic plan now, count the extras like travel, hosting and tips, and spread your shopping across a few paychecks.

Inflation and credit are among factors contributing to increased holiday spending.

Personal bankruptcies have jumped nearly 50% in just three years, so if you're weighing this option, you're not alone. A big first question: do you qualify for Chapter 7? It comes down to a "means test" comparing your income to your state's average. Read More:

Buy now, pay later can feel like a lifesaver when the AC breaks or the grocery bill comes in higher than expected. But those small payments add up quietly, and before long you might be juggling three or four at once without realizing it. If that sounds familiar, you’re definitely not the only one, and adding up every installment in one place is a good first step toward getting back on top of it:

A broken air conditioner can be an urgent, expensive problem. For Lera Pauling, the repair cost more than $2,300, so she used a buy now, pay later loan rather than paying the full amount upfront.

Groceries, gas, a car repair, a medical bill. When prices are up about 30% since the pandemic and paychecks haven’t kept pace, the difference has to come from somewhere.

Our new 2026 data shows that for more people, it’s coming from personal loans. Nearly half of the people who came to us for help this past quarter had one, up from about a third in 2020. And the average amount of credit card and other unsecured debt they carry is now $40,200.

Debt usually comes from everyday life, not bad choices. See what’s behind the numbers: https://hubs.la/Q04BFVFh0
