Just a quick reminder that our office will be closed on Monday 1 June for the King’s Birthday public holiday.

Despite the name, King Charles III doesn’t actually celebrate his birthday until November… but we’re certainly not complaining about the long weekend 😉.

We’ll be back on Tuesday 2 June, refreshed and ready to jump back into things. If anything urgent pops up while we’re away, please flick us an email and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Wishing you a safe and enjoyable long weekend! 👑

As winter approaches, schools often experience increased pressure on operational budgets, particularly around building maintenance and energy use.

Heating is one of those areas that can quietly increase costs if systems aren’t running efficiently. When heat pumps haven’t been regularly serviced, schools may experience reduced performance, higher running costs, and avoidable breakdowns during the colder months.

Taking a preventative approach now can help reduce the risk of unexpected expenditure and support smoother day-to-day operations throughout the winter term. A little planning ahead can go a long way during the winter months

If you’d like to review operational costs or talk more about winter-related expenditure, our team is here to help.

Pink Shirt Day is on Friday 15 May 2026, with schools across Aotearoa coming together to stand against bullying and promote kindness, inclusion, and respect.

At Accounting For Schools, we’re proud to support this important kaupapa and the positive difference it continues to make in school communities. We’ll be standing alongside schools across the country, wearing pink and showing our support in a simple but meaningful way.

Schools play a huge role in shaping culture and wellbeing, not just learning. It’s often the small everyday moments that have the biggest impact helping students feel safe, included, and supported in who they are.

We encourage all schools to get involved, wear pink, and keep the conversations going that help build kindness and inclusion throughout the year.

Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora speak up, stand together, stop bullying.

As ANZAC Day approaches, we pause to remember and honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of all New Zealand and Australian servicemen and women, past and present. We reflect with gratitude on the freedoms we enjoy today, made possible by those who gave so much in times of conflict and uncertainty.

Lest we forget.

ANZAC Day falls on Saturday 25 April this year and will be officially observed on Monday 27 April 2026. Our office will be closed on this day, reopening on Tuesday 28 April.

From all of us at AFS, we wish you a peaceful and reflective ANZAC Day.

What would happen if your school’s key finance staff left tomorrow?

In many schools, critical tasks like budgeting, payroll, and cash flow management live inside the head of a single individual. Without clear documentation or a succession plan, a sudden departure doesn't just cause stress, it creates significant financial risk.

To protect your school, take a moment to assess your resilience:
✅ Are key financial processes documented?
✅ Does more than one person understand your systems?
✅ Are delegations and approvals clearly structured?
✅ Do you have external support if needed?

Succession planning isn’t about expecting someone to leave; it’s about protecting your school’s financial stability and ensuring continuity.

Planning for the unexpected ensures your school can keep running smoothly, even during transitions. By investing a little time now in documenting processes, cross training staff, and setting up reliable support, you safeguard your school’s finances and give yourself peace of mind.
