🎄 Planning Your Staff Christmas Party? Here’s the Tax Lowdown

Christmas parties are great for team morale — but IRD treats them differently. Most staff celebrations are only 50% tax deductible, including food, drinks, venue hire, and entertainment. GST follows the same rule.

The key number to remember: $300 per employee, per quarter. Staying under this keeps your event FBT-exempt, which is usually the most cost-effective option.

💡 Quick tips to maximise deductions:
• Keep light, work-day refreshments separate — these are often 100% deductible.
• If costs creep up, consider small employee contributions to stay under the FBT threshold.

🎉 Smart planning = a festive party with no tax surprises. If you want to understand these rules in more depth, check out our latest article on our website https://f.mtr.cool/ugzodiccce

🏠 Labour’s Proposed Capital Gains Tax: What Property Investors Need to Know

Labour is proposing a 28% capital gains tax on investment properties if they win the 2026 election. It would apply from 1 July 2027 and replace the current bright-line test.

Who’s affected?
Anyone who owns an investment property on 1 July 2027—residential, commercial, holiday homes or baches. Family homes, farms, KiwiSaver, businesses, inheritances and personal items are exempt.

Key points:
• Only gains after 1 July 2027 will be taxed
• Properties will need an official valuation on that date
• Capital improvements must be tracked
• Losses can be carried forward, but only to offset future property gains
