Throughout September, the BDO Tauranga team took on our Spring into September Challenge, all about getting moving, trying something different and having some fun along the way.
Together, we clocked an impressive 7.75 million steps, covering the equivalent of around 6,200 km on our virtual journey around New Zealand, visiting all the BDO New Zealand offices along the way.
But it wasn’t all about the steps. Our team was encouraged to have a go, with opportunities to try Tai Chi, pickleball and line dancing, take part in the local Weekday Challenge by finding different ways to get to work, and get out and explore the local rivers that inspired the names of our new meeting rooms.
It was a great reminder that wellbeing doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s simply about getting involved, trying something new and having fun together.
Here are a few highlights from the month 👇

BDO Tauranga is proud to support the CA College Prize Fund, a long-standing community initiative that recognises and encourages outstanding secondary school students across the Western Bay of Plenty.

Established more than 50 years ago, the Fund was co-founded in the 1970s by Peter Simmonds, whose practice has since evolved into BDO Tauranga, alongside Ian Young of what is now Young Read Woudberg (YRW). Today, the initiative continues through the collective support of local chartered accountants and businesses.

In 2025, the Fund raised $9,500, enabling $9,535 in awards to be distributed across nine local secondary schools, supporting students as they take the next step towards tertiary education and future careers. The Fund has awarded more than $39,000 in prizes over the past five years, helping celebrate academic achievement while promoting the accounting profession and strengthening the pipeline of future talent in our region.

This collaborative effort demonstrates the positive impact local businesses can make when working together to invest in the next generation.

Last week we had the pleasure of catching up with Ollie Larson, this year's recipient of BDO's funding for the Adastra Scholarship. Remarkably, Ollie only started playing the trumpet part way through Year 9 after being encouraged to take lessons at school. Now a Year 13 student Tauranga Boys' College, he has established himself as one of New Zealand's most promising young jazz musicians through an incredible commitment to his craft, often practising up to six hours a day.

Since Year 11, Ollie has been recognised at the National Youth Jazz Festival collecting awards over the past three years. This year alone, he won the P & L Norman Trophy for Best Big Band Lead Trumpet, the Brian Geoghan Trophy for Best Combo Trumpet or Flugelhorn, and was selected for the National Youth Jazz Band.

The The Adastra Foundation has helped Ollie purchase two new trumpet mouthpieces and fund travel to Wellington, where he will compete in the National Youth Competition in composition and improvisation, as well as perform at the Wellington Jazz Festival later this year.

He's also enjoyed the performance and personal development workshops that are part of the Adastra programme.

With aspirations to study at Cambridge University, or alternatively in Sydney or Wellington while continuing his musical journey, Ollie has an exciting future ahead. We're proud to support talented rangatahi like Ollie as they pursue their ambitions and reach their full potential. 🌟🎶

Applications are now open for 2027 Adastra Scholarship.

The passion I’ve found in music has become a crucial pillar of who I am and how I approach life. Not only is it an amazing form of expression and security, but also a community of diverse minds and amazing people. And the things you learn from music are so applicable in every aspect of […]

🌼 Daffodil Day at BDO Tauranga! 💛

The BDO Tauranga team celebrated Daffodil Day yesterday as part of our monthly team meeting, with a fabulous splash of yellow throughout the team! From yellow shoes and headwear to yellow outfits, people got into the spirit of the day.

We were thrilled to raise an amazing $1,400 through our Yellow Daffodil Day raffle prize draw and company contribution!

A huge thank you to everyone who donated. It was a great way to come together as a team, have some fun and, most importantly, support an important cause. 🙌
