If you can't answer these 5 questions about your business in under 60 seconds, we need to talk.

I've worked with dozens of business owners who are brilliant operators, but couldn't tell me their gross margin off the top of their heads.

That's not a character flaw. That's a systems problem.

Swipe through the 5 numbers that separate businesses that scale from businesses that survive →

Save this post. Share it with your team. Then ask yourself honestly, can you answer all 5?

Not every business needs the same kind of accounting support. And most are paying for the wrong one.

There are three stages most NZ businesses are in, and each one needs something different:

📋 Stage 1 — Get Compliant. You need your tax sorted, your GST filed, and your IRD obligations met. This is the foundation. Without it, nothing else works.

📈 Stage 2 — Get Strategic Compliance is ticked. Now you want cash flow forecasting, business planning, and quarterly check-ins that actually move the needle.

🚀 Stage 3 — Get Accelerated. You're ready to scale. You need fortnightly advisory, a diagnostic roadmap, and a team that treats your business as if it were their own.

The problem? Most people are in Stages 2 or 3 but are only receiving Stage 1 support.

At Money Metrics, we've structured our services around exactly where you are, so you're not paying for what you don't need, and you're not missing what you do.

From $325/month, we've made Chartered Accountant-level support accessible for everyday NZ businesses. No fluff. No jargon. Just real, practical support from people who've been in business themselves.

Which stage are you at right now, 1, 2, or 3? Comment below, and we'll tell you exactly what we'd recommend. No pitch, just honest advice.

You worked 60 hours last week. The team is stretched. The calendar is full. So why does the bank account feel... tight?

This is one of the most common and most heartbreaking conversations we have with NZ business owners.
They're not lazy. They're not bad at their craft. They're just running hard in the wrong direction without realising it.

Here's what's usually going on:
🔴 Revenue is growing, but so are costs, and no one's tracking the gap
🔴 Invoices are going out, but cash isn't coming in fast enough
🔴 The owner is paying everyone else first, and themselves last (or not at all)
🔴 There's no budget, no forecast, just vibes and hope

Busyness feels like progress. But activity isn't the same as profitability.

The businesses we see turn things around aren't the ones that work more hours. They're the ones that get the right structure, the right numbers, and the right support around them.

If this hit a little close to home, that's okay. That's actually the first step.

Has there been a moment in your business where you realised "busy" wasn't the same as "successful"? Share it below; your story might be exactly what someone else needs to hear today. 👇

A Bay of Plenty business owner recently came to us feeling stuck.

Revenue looked healthy.

Customers were coming through the door.

But somehow… there was never much cash left over.

Sound familiar?

When we looked a little deeper, we found the issue wasn’t revenue.

They were tracking sales, but not the financial drivers that actually determine business performance, such as:
• Gross profit margin
• Net profit
• Cash flow
• Break-even point
• Customer acquisition cost

Once we started reviewing these numbers regularly, things changed quickly.

One service that looked busy on the surface turned out to be far less profitable than expected. By adjusting pricing and focusing on the most profitable work, the business improved profitability within months.

Same business.
Same team.
Just better visibility of the numbers that mattered.

Because most businesses don’t have a revenue problem.

They have a clarity problem.

How often do you review the numbers that are actually driving your business?

Your financial numbers tell a story.

They reveal things like:
• Where you’re losing money
• Which products are profitable
• When you can afford to grow
• When it’s time to slow down

But many business owners only look at their numbers when something goes wrong.

And by then, the story has already been written.

When you start reviewing your numbers regularly, something powerful happens.

You move from reacting… to leading.

🧮When was the last time you really reviewed your numbers?

Imagine trying to drive from Tauranga to Auckland…

But you only look at the road once an hour.

You’d drift all over the place.

That’s what happens when businesses only review their financials once a year at tax time.

The most successful businesses check their numbers regularly.

Weekly. Monthly. Quarterly.

Not because they love spreadsheets…
But because visibility leads to better decisions.
And better decisions lead to stronger businesses.

How often are you checking your numbers?

Running a business means juggling a lot.

Sales.
Staff.
Operations.
Customers.
Cash flow.

It’s easy to feel like you have to figure everything out yourself.

But the strongest business owners build the right team around them.

That might include:
• An accountant for compliance
• A business advisor for strategy
• A mentor for perspective

Because business isn’t meant to be a solo sport.

👌The right support can completely change the trajectory of your business.

Who do you have in your business corner right now?

We hear this a lot from business owners...

“I think we’re doing alright.”

But when we ask a few simple questions…
• What’s your profit margin?
• What’s your monthly break-even?
• How many months of cash runway do you have?

…things go quiet.

Running a business on gut feel alone is risky.

Sustainably growing businesses consistently track a few key financial numbers.

Not hundreds of reports.

Just the numbers that actually drive decisions.

Because clarity changes everything.

A lot of business owners think their accountant will help them grow their business.

But here’s the reality…
Most accountants focus on compliance and reporting, things like tax returns, GST, and financial statements.

That’s important. It keeps your business protected and compliant.

But those numbers usually tell you what has already happened.

If you want help with strategy, planning, profitability and growth, that’s where business advisory comes in.

Think of it this way:
An accountant keeps the engine running.A business advisor helps you choose the direction.

And the best businesses usually have both.

🙋‍♀️Do you feel like you’re getting strategy… or just reports?
