Sitting in the monthly meeting, being handed the management accounts, and nodding along.

Almost everyone has done it. You can usually feel how the business is going from the workload. The numbers just turn up afterwards to confirm it.

Nodding along isn't a failing. Nobody ever sat you down and showed you what to look at.

That's exactly what Knowing Your Numbers is for. One day, your own accounts, and Stephen working through them with you in plain English. No jargon, and no question too basic.

You'll walk into your next meeting knowing what to ask.

Tuesday 10 November 2026 or Tuesday 12 January 2027, in Durham.

A nice way to wrap up the week with a birthday celebration!

A very happy birthday, Alex. We hope your day is full of laughs, cake and good company and you celebrate all weekend.

The perfect way to roll into the weekend, and a good reminder of the people who make Valued what it is.

Happy birthday, Alex, from all of us.

Your most profitable year can be the one you nearly run out of money.

More orders means more materials, more wages and more stock, all paid for long before your customers pay you.

The profit is real. It's just sitting in someone else's bank account for another sixty days.

Profit is an opinion. Cash is a fact.

At Knowing Your Numbers we spend a whole afternoon on cash. Why it's different from profit, where it gets stuck, and how to see a squeeze coming weeks before it lands. You build a thirteen week cash forecast for your own business and take it home with you.

Last week Stephen told the story of a client who'd run his business for thirty years and still felt he'd been working the numbers out on his own.

Today we can tell you what we're doing about it.

Knowing Your Numbers is a one day course in Durham, led by Stephen. It's for business owners and directors who needs to understand the numbers. No jargon, and no question too basic.

You bring your own accounts. You work on your own figures in a small group, and you leave knowing exactly what your numbers are telling you, and what to ask next.

Afterwards there's a virtual online session, WhatsApp community and invitation to our quarterly numbers clinic, so it doesn't stop at the classroom door.

We've already had business owners get in touch, and the first places are taken.

Tuesday 10 November 2026 or Tuesday 12 January 2027. Eight places on each date. ÂŁ295 plus VAT for these founding groups.

“We all have two lives. The second begins when you realise you only have one.”

Tom Hiddleston dropped this quote into a podcast this week and it's so true.

So many people run on autopilot for years. Busy, capable, getting it all done, but never quite stopping to ask what it’s all for.

Then something makes them pause. The question changes from “what do I need to do next” to “why am I doing this at all”.

We talk about purpose a lot because we’ve seen how much calmer people feel once they know their why. Decisions get easier. Saying no gets easier. The work starts to fit around the life, not the other way round.

If you haven’t asked yourself that question in a while, this weekend might be a good time.

A client asked us recently if we knew of a course that would help his son understand the numbers in their business.

The son has just been made a director. His dad has run the place for thirty years.

In a lot of family businesses, the numbers end up being one person's private language. Not on purpose. Whoever built the place learned to read them the hard way and never had a reason to teach anyone else.

Then the day comes when they want to step back, and nobody else can read what they've been reading every month for decades.

That's a worry nobody needs to carry. It's also very fixable.

If this sounds like you, watch this space...

One of the VAT questions we hear most often comes from business owners who check their turnover against the threshold once a year, at their year end. It's a sensible instinct, but it isn't quite how the rule works.

The registration threshold is ÂŁ90,000 of taxable sales, and HMRC's test is a rolling one. At the end of every month you look back over the previous twelve months. If that total has gone over ÂŁ90,000, you have 30 days from the end of that month to register.

So it doesn't matter where your tax year or accounting year falls. A strong few months can take you over in, say, September, even if the year as a whole looked like it would come in under. There's also a forward-looking test: if you expect to go over ÂŁ90,000 in the next 30 days on their own, that counts too.

If you're getting close, the easiest fix is adding it to a monthly routine. Last Thursday's fifteen-minute check is a good place for it.

We had two conversations recently that stuck with us.

Not because of anything clever we said, just people saying things like "why has no one explained this to me before?" or "I've learned more in the last half hour than I have in the last year."

It got us thinking. Not about us, about them, and how normal that feeling seems to be.

If you've ever sat in a meeting with your accountant and left with more questions than answers... if you've never really understood what your numbers are trying to tell you... if you've been quietly wondering whether you're getting the guidance you're actually paying for —

You're not alone, and you're not asking for too much.

Sometimes it's not about being told what's wrong. It's just someone taking the time to explain it properly.

If that's missing right now, it might be worth a conversation — no pressure, no pitch, just a chat.

Around this time of year a lot of businesses are dealing with renewals: insurance, software, rent, suppliers. Most of those bills have crept up. Far fewer owners put their own prices through the same review.

It's worth doing the sum plainly. If what it costs you to deliver your work has gone up and your prices have stayed where they were, the difference comes out of your margin. In a small business, the margin is usually your wage.

That doesn't mean a big price rise, or one made without thought. Sometimes it's a small annual increase that customers already expect. Sometimes it's noticing that one service has quietly stopped paying its way.

The first step is just knowing the number. Once you know it, the decision is yours.

This week Stephen was in London for the Accounting Excellence Awards 2026, as a guest of Sage.

It was an evening celebrating the people and firms shaping where accounting and bookkeeping go next, and a good chance to catch up with friends from across the profession.

What stays with you from a night like that is the people. Every firm recognised was a team that decided to do things a bit better for the people they look after. That's the part of the job we care about most too.

Congratulations to this year's finalists and winners. Thank you to Sage for having us, and to Accounting Excellence for bringing everyone together.
