Capital Allowances vs Expenses 💰

Not everything you buy for your business is treated the same.

🚗 Day-to-day costs (fuel, software, materials) = expenses → deducted straight away
⚙️ Bigger purchases (equipment, machinery, tools) = capital allowances

You could claim 100% tax relief upfront using the Annual Investment Allowance instead of spreading it over years.

If you’re planning a large purchase, timing it correctly can reduce your tax bill significantly this year.

Starting something new? Read this before you do...

Starting something new is often the easy part.

What gets underestimated is the ongoing attention it requires. Time, focus, and energy don’t appear from nowhere. They’re taken from somewhere else.

Before committing, it’s worth asking whether a new idea strengthens what already exists, or quietly stretches it thin.

If you enjoy thoughtful perspectives on business decisions like this, our weekly newsletter shares practical insights each Tuesday. Just send an email to [email protected]

Allowances don’t carry forward at year end 📆

As the end of the tax year approaches, it’s worth remembering that many tax allowances reset each year.

HMRC sets a range of annual allowances that apply on a use-it-or-lose-it basis. If they’re not used by the end of the tax year, they generally don’t carry forward into the next one.

These can include allowances linked to income, dividends, pensions, and certain business costs. Once the tax year closes, opportunities linked to that year are gone, and any planning has to start again under the next set of rules.

This is why leaving everything until after the year end can limit options. Having visibility over where you stand before the year closes gives you time to understand what applies and avoid unnecessary surprises later.

It’s not about rushing decisions. It’s about awareness and understanding how the tax year boundary affects what’s available.

The hidden cost of constantly switching priorities 🥵

Switching priorities can feel sensible.

Responding quickly, adjusting plans, and chasing new opportunities often look like good leadership. Over time, though, frequent changes in direction can quietly slow progress and drain energy.

Stability doesn’t mean standing still. It often means giving the right things enough time to work.

If this resonates with you, our weekly newsletter explores how small shifts in approach can make a big difference to focus and momentum. Just email [email protected]

Staff events and entertaining aren’t taxed the same way 🎉

Not all entertaining is treated the same for tax purposes, and the difference between staff events and client entertaining is important.

HMRC allows certain staff events to be tax-free, provided specific conditions are met. For the current tax year, the key figure is £150 per head, per year, including VAT.

By contrast, client entertaining is treated differently. While it may still be a legitimate business cost, HMRC does not generally allow tax relief on client entertaining, and VAT is usually not recoverable.

Motivation is powerful, but unreliable...

When progress depends on how motivated you feel, consistency becomes fragile.

Systems, on the other hand, keep things moving even when energy dips 📈

The businesses that make steady progress usually aren’t relying on willpower. They’ve built structures that make the right actions easier to repeat.

If you’re thinking about how to make good habits stick in your business, our weekly newsletter explores ideas like this in more depth. Just send an email to [email protected]

Buying equipment can reduce taxable profits ⚙️

If you buy equipment for your business, the timing and type of purchase can matter more than many people realise.

Under HMRC rules, the Annual Investment Allowance allows many businesses to deduct the full cost of qualifying plant and machinery from their profits in the year of purchase, up to the current annual limit.

Qualifying items can include things like tools, machinery, equipment, and certain fixtures used in the business. Not everything qualifies, and vehicles are treated differently, but for many businesses this allowance can make a noticeable difference.
