What exactly is the Β£100k tax trap? πŸ€”

If you're earning between £100,00 and £125,140 per year, you could be paying an effective rate of 60% tax - 62% if you also pay National Insurance! 😱

This is because once your income crosses Β£100k, you begin to lose your tax-free personal allowance at a rate of Β£1 for every Β£2 earned.

At ANY Accounting, we can help you manage your finances to reduce your adjusted net income, letting you keep your tax-free allowance. Read our guide below or get in touch to find out what we can do for you πŸ‘‡

πŸ—¨οΈ "I got my tax return back and the bill was much higher than I expected. My salary hasn't gone up much, so why is my tax bill so high?"

We hear this all the time from new clients.

For people earning just over Β£100,000, that confusion is completely understandable. On the surface, nothing looks different. You are still paying tax at what appears to be the normal rate. But in the background, something has changed: your tax-free Personal Allowance has started to disappear.

For every Β£2 earned above Β£100,000, you lose Β£1 of your Β£12,570 allowance. That income that used to be tax-free is now taxable at 40%. Combined with the 40% higher-rate tax already being paid, the effective rate on earnings in that band reaches 60%.

This change doesn't always show up clearly on your pay-slips, and if nobody explains it to you, it doesn't seem to make any sense.

Luckily, we can help you understand the Β£100k tax trap and reduce its impact.

If any of this sounds familiar, or if you are not entirely sure where you stand, we are happy to take a look.

Are you a high-earner making over Β£100k per year? πŸ’Έ

You may have heard of the Β£100k tax trap. Under UK tax law, for every Β£2 you earn above Β£100k, you'll lose Β£1 of your tax-free personal allowance. Because you're already being taxed at a higher 40% tax rate, the loss of your personal allowance creates an effective 60% marginal tax rate for some high-earners making between Β£100,000 to Β£125,140.

Luckily, with the right planning, you can avoid paying this higher rate of tax. Here's some ways to avoid the Β£100k tax trap:

πŸ‘‰ Time bonuses and dividends - see if you can push them into the next tax year if you're at risk of crossing the Β£100k threshold.
πŸ‘‰ Make Gift Aid contributions to reduce your adjusted net income.
πŸ‘‰ See if your workplace offers salary sacrifice such as a company vehicle or a cycle to work scheme.
πŸ‘‰ Increase your pension contributions through your workplace or make contributions under relief at source.

If you think you could be in the Β£100k tax trap, contact us. The sooner you get in touch, the more ways we can help. πŸ‘‡

Are you a high-earner making over Β£100k per year? πŸ’Έ

You may be paying more tax than necessary due to a quirk in the UK tax system.

It is called the Β£100,000 tax trap, and it works like this:

Most UK taxpayers receive a Personal Allowance of Β£12,570 free from income tax. Once your adjusted net income exceeds Β£100,000, HMRC to take away Β£1 of that allowance for every Β£2 earned above the threshold. By the time you're earning Β£125,140, your tax-free personal allowance is gone.

Because you are already paying 40% higher-rate tax on income in this band, the loss of the allowance adds a further 20% effective rate on top. This means you could be paying an effective 60% marginal tax rate.

Some ways to tell if you've landed in the 100k tax trap include:

πŸ‘‰ A salary increase or bonus pushes annual income just over Β£100,000
πŸ‘‰ Dividend income from a limited company takes the total above the threshold
πŸ‘‰ A tax code changes mid-year with no clear explanation
πŸ‘‰ A Self-Assessment return comes back larger than expected
πŸ‘‰ Child Benefit starts reducing or stops altogether
πŸ‘‰ A colleague or your accountant tells you about the tax trap

Wages have been increasing in line with inflation, but the Β£100,000 threshold and tax bands have not been changed to reflect that, meaning more people get caught each year without realising.

The good news is that you can reduce the impact of the Β£100k tax trap with careful financial planning. The earlier you get in touch, the better.

If your income is approaching or has crossed Β£100,000, we can help.

Are you a high-earner making over Β£100k per year? πŸ’Έ

You could be paying more tax than necessary thanks to something called the Β£100k tax trap.

When your income crosses the Β£100k threshold, HMRC begins to reduce your personal allowance by Β£1 for every Β£2 earned after Β£100k, until your personal allowance is completely gone. Because you already pay a higher tax rate, this means you could effectively be paying 60% tax!

Here's 7 signs to look out for if you think your could've fallen into the 100k tax trap.

If any of these sound like you, contact ANY Accounting and Bookkeeping Services - we'll help you plan your finances to reduce your net adjusted income and avoid overpaying on tax.

Are you "just selling a few things" or will HMRC think you're trading? 🫣

The difference can be hard to navigate, but we're here to help you determine where you stand tax-wise.

If you are decluttering and selling on things you no longer need such as old clothes, then you are NOT trading, and likely will not need to pay tax. πŸ‘—

But if you are buying, upcycling, or making items with the intention to sell them on at a profit, you are trading and may have to declare your profits to HMRC. πŸ’Έ

Now, selling platforms like Etsy, Vinted, and eBay may share your data with HMRC if you're suspected to be trading without declaring your status.

If you think you might need to pay taxes on your Etsy, Vinted or eBay sales, ANY Accounting can help.

If you're selling on eBay, Vinted or Etsy, you might owe tax without realising it.

If you have over 30 item sales or make over Β£1,700, selling platforms may pass your selling data on to HMRC to check if you may owe tax.

Decluttering your house and selling items you no longer use is fine, but if you're regularly selling or are buying items with the intention of selling for profit, you might have to register as a trader with HMRC.

At ANY Accounting, our team are here to offer you friendly and impartial advice. Get in touch πŸ‘‡
