Another reason clients often move accountants?

Communication.

I’ve had several new clients recently tell me they’ve waited weeks, and sometimes months, for answers to relatively simple questions.

Running a business can be stressful enough without wondering if your accountant will get back to you.

I pride myself on being approachable and responsive.

Whilst nobody can be available 24/7, I aim to respond to client queries within 24 hours unless I’m on holiday.

In fact, I’m feeling a little under the weather this week, so whilst some jobs may take me a little longer than usual, clients will still hear from me and know where things stand.

Sometimes people don’t need an immediate solution.

They simply want an acknowledgement, an update and reassurance that something is being dealt with.

Good communication goes a long way.

One of the most common things I hear from new clients is:

👉 “My previous accountant never explained the accounts.”

The accounts were prepared.
The tax return was submitted.

But they didn’t really understand:
🎾 How the business was performing
🎾 Why the tax bill was what it was
🎾 What the numbers actually meant

For me, preparing the accounts is only part of the job.

I believe clients should understand their numbers and have the confidence to make informed decisions about their business.

After all, they’re your accounts, not mine.

My biggest piece of advice regarding Making Tax Digital?

Don’t wait until your first submission is due.

The businesses that will have the smoothest transition are those already keeping their records up to date and using suitable software.

Most of my clients already have their bookkeeping updated regularly throughout the year, whether they’re VAT registered or not.

That means when quarterly reporting arrives, it’s far less of a change.

Making Tax Digital may feel like another piece of compliance, but I genuinely believe many business owners will benefit from having more up-to-date financial information and a better understanding of how their business is performing.

Here’s something many people haven’t realised…

The first quarterly submission deadline for those joining Making Tax Digital is 7 August.

Right in the middle of the summer holiday season.

Many business owners will be:
☀️ Away on holiday
☀️ Looking after children during school holidays
☀️ Trying to enjoy some downtime

The last thing you’ll want to be doing is trying to find software, engage an accountant and learn a new system.

By August, you should already be comfortable with how everything works.

A lot of the discussion around Making Tax Digital focuses on software.

But in my experience, software isn’t the biggest challenge.

The biggest change is developing good habits.

🎾 Keeping records up to date
🎾 Recording income regularly
🎾 Keeping receipts organised
🎾 Understanding your numbers throughout the year

Businesses already doing these things will generally find MTD much easier than those leaving everything until year end.

One of the biggest misconceptions about Making Tax Digital is the £50,000 threshold.

Many people think this includes all of their income.

It doesn’t.

The £50,000 test is based on your qualifying income from:
🎾 Self-employment
🎾 Property income

Employment income isn’t included when determining whether you fall into the first phase of MTD.

So if you earn:
• £40,000 from employment
• £45,000 from self-employment

You wouldn’t currently meet the £50,000 qualifying income threshold.

If you’re unsure whether MTD applies to you, now is the time to find out.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax seems to be generating more questions than almost anything else at the moment.

One thing I keep hearing is:

👉 “I’ve got plenty of time to think about that.”

The reality is, if you’re likely to be affected, preparation should already be happening.

Choosing software.
Keeping digital records.
Understanding what information you’ll need to submit.

The businesses that will find the transition easiest are the ones preparing now.

My goal over the next few weeks is simple:

🎾 Get as many clients up to date as possible.

🎾 Complete plenty of Self Assessment tax returns.

🎾 Help clients understand what they owe and when.

🎾 Make sure people can enjoy their summer knowing their paperwork is already under control.

If you’re someone who likes to be organised rather than leaving everything until January, now is a great time to get started.

One of the most common things clients say after we’ve completed their tax return early is:

👉 “That’s a weight off my mind.”

And I completely understand why.

Often it’s not the tax bill itself that causes the stress.

It’s not knowing.

Once you know the figure, you can make a plan.

Whether that’s putting money aside each month or simply knowing where you stand.

Good financial planning starts with having good information.

One thing many clients find surprising is that I’m already starting to think about Self Assessment tax returns.

The deadline may be January, but I much prefer getting them completed well in advance.

There are lots of benefits:

🎾 You know exactly what tax is due.

🎾 You have longer to budget for it.

🎾 Any questions can be dealt with early.

🎾 You avoid the January rush.

For me, January is a deadline—not a target!
