📡"Cosmic “Hamburger” Has the Secret Ingredients (For Giant Planet Formation, That Is)" by National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO)

Do cosmic hamburgers hold the secret ingredients. . .for planets? This one sure does! Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) were surprised to discover the very earliest phases of giant planet formation between the dense layers of gas and dust in the “Gomez’s Hamburger” system, referred to as GoHam. This research was initially shared at a press conference at the American Astronomical Society’s 247th meeting and has just been published in The Astrophysical Journal.

Astronomers using ALMA spot possible early signs of giant planet formation in Gomez’s Hamburger, one of the largest known planet-forming disks.

📡"Tiny planet-forming disks reveal a big surprise about how planets are born" by Tech Explorist

Powerful images from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have revealed spectacular disks of gas and dust swirling around young stars. Some were carved into beautiful rings and dark gaps, like cosmic vinyl records. These features quickly became some of the most iconic images in modern astronomy because they appeared to offer a glimpse of planets forming in real time.

But there was a puzzle. Not all stellar nurseries looked so dramatic.

Many smaller disks appeared surprisingly plain. No rings. No gaps. No obvious signs of construction. Just compact, smooth-looking circles of dust surrounding newborn stars.

Hidden gaps in tiny disks could point to planets still forming.

📡"ALMA Reveals Planetary Formation Structures In Small Disks" by Astrobiology.Com

Using ALMA’s exceptionally sharp vision, astronomers have uncovered rings, gaps, and cavities in extremely compact disks around young stars. The observations show that planet-formation structures extend into regions comparable in size to the inner Solar System, suggesting that many small disks may have looked smooth simply because their details were too small to resolve.
