WICKNELL CHIVAYO AND WIFE LUCY TO BE BURIED WITHOUT THEIR HEADS

HARARE — The remains of Zimbabwean billionaire businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy, have been placed in caskets ahead of their final farewell following the helicopter crash that claimed their lives last week.

The couple’s remains will lie in state at their mansion in Harare today, where family members, friends and mourners are expected to gather to pay their final respects.

Chivayo and Lucy will be buried tomorrow in Harare.

The couple are expected to be buried without their heads after authorities were unable to recover them following the devastating helicopter crash.

The crash caused extensive damage to the aircraft and the remains of those on board, making the recovery and identification process particularly difficult.

Family and authorities have since proceeded with funeral arrangements, with the couple’s remains placed in caskets ahead of their burial.

The tragedy has shocked Zimbabwe, with relatives, friends and members of the public continuing to mourn the deaths of the businessman and his wife.

Their final burial tomorrow will bring to an end days of mourning following the fatal helicopter accident.

Chitambala Mwewa has officially been sworn in as Mayor of Lusaka, formally taking up the position weeks after winning the mayoral election on the UPND ticket.

Mwewa was declared winner after polling 200,029 votes in the August 13 general election.

A subsequent petition challenging his election was withdrawn by consent on September 24, with the Local Government Election Tribunal confirming him as duly elected Mayor.

His formal installation comes after he had already taken a prominent role in Lusaka City Council’s Operation Clear Path, an exercise targeting street vending, unauthorised bus operations and congestion in the Central Business District.

The operation has now entered its second phase.

The swearing-in also puts to rest questions raised in recent days over Mwewa exercising mayoral leadership before his formal installation.

Former Lusaka Mayor Elias Kamanga had argued that, despite supporting the clean-up, Mwewa needed to be formally installed for the council’s actions to rest on a stronger legal and administrative foundation.

A Business executive of Lusaka has sued Shoprite Zambia Limited seeking damages for injuries she allegedly sustained after slipping and falling on cooking oil that had been left on the floor while she was shopping.

Maggie Musukwa wants the Lusaka High Court to order Shoprite Zambia to pay her general damages for pain and suffering arising from a broken right shoulder and loss of amenities.

Ms Musukwa is also seeking damages for loss of prospective earnings from the date of the injury to the date of judgment, special damages for medical expenses and other expenses incurred, among other reliefs.

In a statement of claim filed in the Lusaka High Court Principal Registry, Ms Musukwa stated that she was a self-employed business executive and chef who conducts her trade in Lusaka and resides at Flat Number 4, University of Zambia (UNZA) Commonwealth Village, Lusaka.

She stated that on July 23, 2026, she was at the Shoprite Mini Kalingalinga store at Kamloops Mall as a customer and lawful visitor.

Ms Musukwa said while carrying out her shopping inside the store, she allegedly slipped and fell on cooking oil that had been left unattended on the floor within the shopping area.

She said the cooking oil constituted a dangerous and hazardous substance that created a foreseeable risk of injury to customers lawfully using the premises.

Ms Musukwa claimed that, at the material time, Shoprite knew or ought reasonably to have known about the existence of the hazard and the risk it posed.

She alleged that the defendant negligently failed to remove, clean, isolate, barricade or otherwise make safe the area where the cooking oil had been spilled.

“The defendant further failed to place or display warning signs, notices, barriers, or any other precautionary measures to alert customers, including the plaintiff, hence causing her injuries,” Ms Musukwa stated.

She said as a consequence, she sustained injuries and suffered pain and loss of amenities.

UPND DISTANCES ITSELF FROM CALLS TO REMOVE PRESIDENTIAL TERM LIMIT

By Elesani Phiri & Philip Sikainda

The UPND says it will not be held responsible for statements by individuals pushing for the removal of the presidential term limit, stating that such individuals are speaking without official party authority.

UPND Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has told Phoenix News that members commenting on the matter are merely exercising their constitutional right to freedom of expression and do not represent the official position of the party.

Mr. Mweetwa said the UPND has just come out of a highly competitive election and is currently taking time to regroup before making clear pronouncements on key national issues.

He said the party and Government will in the coming days clearly state their positions on matters of national interest and communicate them to Zambians who have given the UPND the mandate to govern.

Meanwhile, the Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes-SACCORD-has warned against attempts to scrap the two-term presidential limit following the launch of a Western Province-led campaign dubbed Project 2090.

This follows plans by Western Province residents, led by Chairperson Suzyo Nguni, to petition the Speaker of the National Assembly and Members of Parliament seeking the removal of the presidential term limit.

But SACCORD Executive Director Arthur Muyunda has told Phoenix News that Zambia is a constitutional democracy and has already agreed on how leadership transition should be handled.

He said while democracy allows debate, the discussion must be realistic and grounded in thorough analysis, stressing that term limits protect against the concentration of power and removing them would undermine Zambia's democratic gains.

WHY ME DEMANDS REFUND AFTER FIANCÉE FALLS PREGNANT WHILE HE WAS IN PRISON

By Zambia Reports

Francis Kapwepwe, popularly known as “Why Me”, has allegedly demanded that his former fiancée, Lubuto Musonda, refund every coin he spent on her during their relationship.

Lubuto claims Why Me is demanding the money after learning that she had become pregnant by another man following their separation while he was in prison.

Speaking about the matter, Lubuto said she had already returned the nsalamu that Why Me brought.

She said she faced criticism and accusations while Why Me went missing, including allegations that she was responsible for his disappearance.

“When Francis went missing, I was accused of being behind his disappearance. I was accused of getting him killed and kidnapped, yet I never did that” she said.

Lubuto said she continued supporting Why Me financially after finding out that he had been arrested, and sometimes she would borrow money just to meet his needs.

“When we found out that Francis was arrested, I would send monetary support to him while he was in prison, I would send money every time he asked for something that I even got myself into loans”, she said.

She said she eventually opted to end the relationship because the pressure became too much for her to handle, and the impact it was having on her reputation.

“ While in prison, I decided to break up with Francis because things became just too much. My reputation was tarnished as we all know he was involved in politics”, she said.

Lubuto further claimed that some people distanced themselves from her because of the situation.

She later returned the nsalamu, effectively ending their relationship.

Lubuto now says that Why Me’s sister has approached her demanding that she refund about K17,000, which she says represents money Why Me spent on her.

She has appealed to people to help her as she has no idea what to do in such a situation.
