Back home from Boston after an informative few days at Schwab IMPACT 2026.

Thank you to Charles Schwab and the Schwab Advisor Services team for a well-run conference — sessions on new technology and AI tools, portfolio and practice resources, and good conversations with fellow advisors. A few favorites from the floor: the exhibit hall, a hands-on look at the charting and portfolio tools at the Schwab Advisor Wealth Strategy Consultants booth, the Artemis II conversation, and the announcement of National RIA Day, on February 17, 2027.

I'm looking forward to evaluating the ideas and tools I saw, and applying what fits our practice and the work we do for our clients.

📈 Our Fall Market Update is out — The Week in Review, October 19–23, 2026.

Money didn't leave the market this week. It moved. Eight of eleven sectors rose while the index slipped — a rotation, not a collapse.

Inside the letter: oil's surge and the inflation question it drags behind it, the AI buildout entering its audit phase, the full sector scoreboard, and what diversification actually did this week — in arithmetic, not slogans.

Swipe through the full letter. 👉

Our Q3 2026 market review is out.

Stocks ground out modest gains while bonds had a rough quarter as rates climbed — energy led the way, utilities lagged, and the Fed raised rates in September. Swipe through for the full picture.

One more thing: our website rebuild is almost finished. Soon you will be able to sign up there to get this quarterly review delivered straight to your inbox — we will let you know the moment it is ready.

Bond yields hit a 24-year high. The 10-year Treasury touched 5.36% this morning before a strong $39 billion auction — with heavy foreign demand — pulled it back under 5.3%.

The Fed isn't done. Minutes from September's meeting, released today, show most officials expect another rate hike this year.

Consumers see more inflation ahead. The New York Fed's survey puts one-year inflation expectations at 3.9% — the highest since May 2023.

Washington targets farm equipment. The FTC and USDA launched a joint inquiry into competition in agricultural equipment markets. Caterpillar fell about 6%, with Deere, CNH and AGCO also sharply lower.

Stocks slipped from records. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both eased off yesterday's record highs; the Dow fell nearly 0.7%. The average 30-year mortgage is hovering around 7.5%.

I'll keep these updates coming every couple of days.

Today at the White House, the heads of Anthropic, Google, Meta, Nvidia, OpenAI, and xAI signed a "morally binding" accord on AI self-regulation — with the President calling for "tremendous self-regulation" and no slowdown in development.

As an investor, here's what I'm watching: Washington just took near-term federal AI regulation largely off the table. That removes an overhang for the mega-caps driving this market. But "morally binding" is not legally binding — the real test is whether the promised audits and oversight actually happen.

Moments like this are why a portfolio needs a plan that doesn't depend on any single headline.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that top tech executives had signed a new commitment aimed at better “self-policing” their companies’ AI models, arguing that the light-touch approach represents the best way to balance safety concerns with his desire to accelerate a technology that he’s d...
