Let’s say you receive an unexpected phone call from someone who says they are an IRS agent, who claims you owe money to the IRS. The call seems real because the “agent” even provides what sounds like an actual government badge number. They threaten you with fines or threaten to arrest you if you don't immediately pay the money that you owe.

However, this “tax agent” is actually a cybercriminal, and the debt that you supposedly owe is NOT real! They will try to pressure you into paying them, usually by wire transfer or a prepaid debit card. But if you send any money, it goes straight into the cybercriminal’s pockets!

Remember:

👉🏼 The IRS will not call you and threaten to arrest you. If there is an issue with your taxes, they will usually contact you by mail.

👉🏼 If you do owe money to the IRS, they will never demand immediate payment using prepaid debit cards or wire transfers. Scammers often request payment using these methods because they are more difficult to trace.

👉🏼 Always stop and think!

This , I want to shine the spotlight on my incredible mother, Margaret Ingram.

In 2001, before "STEM" was hardly a recognizable concept, she launched the Science Institute of Discovery (SID), a nonprofit designed to provide mentors, role models and exercises in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math to foster interest in scientific careers among minority and disadvantaged youth in Indian River County.

Using connections she made over the years, Mrs. Ingram has built a cadre of resources in the scientific community, enabling students to interact with professionals from various backgrounds. Robotic engineering, coding, space travel, environmental science, web development, and mechanical and electrical engineering are just some of the areas she has introduced to her SID students.

Not surprisingly, Mrs. Ingram has blazed trails her entire adulthood, retiring from teaching after 35 years with the School District of Indian River County. She has been honored over the years as Florida Teacher of the Year, Hospital District of IRC appointee, Indian River Teacher of the Year, Florida Ambassador for Education, Christa McAuliffe Ambassador for Education, Disney Teacher of the Year, and currently, Moonshot Lead Reading Captain with The Learning Alliance.

Suffice it to say, my mom IS a true, living legend!

This week has been one of the busiest weeks we’ve seen for the jury duty/warrants scam. We’ve had 10 citizens report calls, and unfortunately, one person lost money.

HERE’S WHAT WE’RE SEEING
• Voicemails claiming you missed jury duty
• Calls coming from (850) 684-2711 (caller ID may even appear as “LCSO” or something similar)
• Claims of Outstanding warrants
• Demands for payments in amounts like $800, $4,000, or $8,000
• Instructions to pay using Bitcoin kiosks

HERE'S WHAT THEY DO
⚠️ Scammers create urgency.
⚠️ They threaten to make arrests.
⚠️ They pressure you to stay on the phone and not contact anyone else.
The Leon County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call and demand payment for warrants or jury duty.

IF YOU RECEIVE ONE OF THESE CALLS
✔ Hang up immediately
✔ Do NOT send money
✔ Call LCSO directly using our official main line to verify – 850-606-3300

Once again, Power Forward with Marcus Lemonis by First Commerce CU did not disappoint!! While most of us expected him to talk about leading retail giants, like Camping World and Bed Bath & Beyond, he chose to stick to authentic leadership. He was equal parts inspiring and thought-provoking (although I couldn’t get him to bite on my new business idea😆).
