A financial advisor should do more than just manage investments.

At Pier 42 Advisors, we take a comprehensive approach to financial planning by connecting the major parts of your financial life, including retirement planning, tax planning, investment management, cash flow planning, insurance and risk management, and estate planning coordination.

When those pieces are considered together, your financial decisions can be made with a clearer understanding of how they affect the bigger picture.

If you’re looking for more than just investment management, schedule an introductory call with Pier 42 Advisors to learn more about our approach to comprehensive financial planning.

Retirement is about more than reaching a certain account balance.
It’s about knowing what your day-to-day life can look like, how much you can comfortably spend, how taxes may affect your income, how healthcare fits into the picture, and what you ultimately want to leave behind.

A thoughtful retirement plan brings those pieces together so your money supports the life you actually want to live.
If you’re starting to think seriously about retirement, schedule an introductory call with Pier 42 Advisors to see how a comprehensive financial plan can help bring greater clarity and confidence to your next chapter.

Most retirees think taxes go down in retirement.

In reality:

RMDs increase income later
Social Security becomes taxable
Capital gains stack on top

And suddenly you’re paying more than expected.
The problem isn’t the tax rates—it’s the lack of planning ahead of time.

The best tax strategies happen:

Before retirement
Before RMD age
Before income is forced on you

If you wait until you “need income,” most of the planning opportunities are already gone.

Most people don’t realize how their advisor actually invests their money

Most advisors follow the same process:

1. Ask you to fill out a risk tolerance questionnaire
2. Assign you to a “model portfolio”
3. Charge ~1% per year
4. Rebalance occasionally

That’s it.

No real tax strategy.
No coordination with your retirement income.
No plan for when you actually need the money.

It’s efficient...for the advisor.

But retirement isn’t a model portfolio problem, it’s a cash flow and tax problem.

That’s where most plans break down.

If you’re 50 or older and earned over $150,000 in 2025, the IRS now requires that all catch-up 401(k) contributions be Roth only.

That means you can still contribute — but:
• Catch-up contributions won’t be pre-tax anymore
•You’ll need to actively elect Roth catch-up in your plan (it won’t switch automatically)

IF YOU DON'T MAKE THAT ELECTION, YOUR CATCH-UP CONTRIBUTIONS COULD STOP ALTOGETHER.

A few other notable changes you should know about:
• No more RMDs on Roth 401(k)s (starting 2024)
• Employers can now match into Roth accounts
• Some plans allow employer matching for student loan payments
• Ages 60–63 get a higher catch-up limit (for certain plans)

These changes can impact taxes, cash flow, and long-term strategy, so they’re worth reviewing.

We can walk you through:
• Whether Roth catch-ups make sense for you
• How this affects your tax picture
• Any plan changes you should make

Far too often people believe that Financial Advisors who call themselves a fiduciary are truly looking out for their best interests.

In reality, there is a huge grey area in the financial services industry that allows advisors who push unnecessary products on their clients for high commissions to call themselves fiduciaries.

Below are just a few quick questions to ask your current advisor or any advisor you are thinking about signing on with.

For those in or close to retirement, the recent stock market volatility can be especially scary considering you no longer have the long time horizon to always ride these moments out.

During this stage in your life you should be looking at protecting the income needed from your investments for the next 5-10 years.

Doing so allows you to extend the time horizon for the portion of your portfolio not needed during the years you protected.

This can be done by implementing a time-segmented strategy.

In times of market volatility, it's beneficial to remember that news organizations make money by getting views, and nothing gets more views than scary headlines.

It's not a coincidence that every market downturn is labeled as, "This time it's different!".

Welcome to Pier 42 Advisors.

We are an independent, fee-only financial planning and wealth management firm helping retirees, people approaching retirement, business owners, and families navigate increasingly complex financial decisions.

For many people, working with a financial advisor has traditionally centered around investments and portfolio management. We take a broader approach. Investments are important, but they are only one part of a financial plan. We look at how your cash flow, retirement income, taxes, estate plan, insurance and risk management, and investment strategy work together, and how decisions in one area may affect the others.

A few principles guide how we work:

- Comprehensive Planning: We begin with your goals, cash flow, and overall financial picture, then build investment, tax, retirement, risk management, and estate planning strategies around them.

- Fee-Only Advice: We do not receive commissions for selling investments or insurance products. Our compensation comes directly from our clients.

- Personalized Strategies: Financial planning should not be one-size-fits-all. Each client’s plan and portfolio are designed around their individual circumstances, priorities, and goals.

- Independence: As an independent registered investment advisory firm, we are not owned by or affiliated with a bank, insurance company, brokerage firm, or other financial institution. This allows us to take an open-architecture approach when evaluating solutions for our clients.

At Pier 42, we believe financial planning ultimately comes back to a bigger question:

What do you want your money to allow you to do?

That idea is at the heart of our philosophy: Find Your Why.

On this page, we’ll share practical information and perspectives on retirement planning, investing, tax planning, estate planning, and other financial decisions we regularly help clients navigate.
