“I have QuickBooks” and “my books are ready for taxes” are two different things.

With October 15 approaching, this is where many business owners get stuck.

The transactions are downloaded but nobody has reviewed them.
Personal purchases are mixed in with business expenses.
A credit card account is missing.
And there are still unanswered questions about what certain payments were for.

Before we can prepare the tax return, we have to sort through all of that.

A bank feed is a starting point. It still takes work to make sure the records are complete and the numbers make sense.

And that work takes time, especially when we’re waiting on statements, receipts, or answers from you.

We know running a business means wearing a lot of hats. Bookkeeping is easy to push aside when customers, employees, and bills need your attention.

But putting it off leaves you with a bigger project when the deadline is already close.

Such a honor!

Thank you to Yael Tacher and the GPHCC for nominating me, and to the city and the organizers of the 42nd anniversary of MedWeek for this recognition.

What an honor to be awarded among the other awardees.

First, let me take a second to say that I am having a full circle moment. Over a decade ago I worked for the city’s procurement supporting many Philadelphia businesses.

I started preparing taxes from my dining room table back in the late 90’s while having a full time job. This was before e-filing was a thing.

At TaxSpace, we serve over 400 individuals and small business owners who are working hard, supporting families, and trying to build something of their own. Sometimes they need help with taxes. Sometimes they just need someone to sit down with them, explain their numbers, and help them figure out what comes next.

That work has also inspired me to build Prospera, the Center for Financial Equity, to bring practical financial education and support to more people in our community.

I want to thank my husband, my family, my team, and everyone who has trusted and supported me along the way.

I’m proud to receive this recognition as a Latina business owner, and grateful for the opportunity to keep serving our community. Jessica DeJesus

One year ago today, I left Penn and went from six figures to five. Apparently, being my own boss came with a pay cut. 😂

TaxSpace had been part of my life for years, but giving it my full attention was a big change. I was excited, but I was scared, too.

When we were a team of 2, I worried about how I would meet payroll. Having people depend on a business I was building made every decision feel bigger. A year later, we’re a team of 8, and the business can support those jobs. That means a lot to me because I remember how uncertain I felt at the beginning.

We’ve also opened another office, expanded our services, and continued helping individuals, small businesses, and nonprofits with their taxes and finances.

Along the way, I’ve been building the foundation for Prospera, Center for Financial Equity. My goal is to make financial education and practical business support more accessible to people in our community. It’s still in the early stages, but I’m excited about what we can build.

This year has involved learning to delegate, making difficult decisions, and finding time to plan while keeping up with the day-to-day. There are still worries and plenty of things I’m figuring out. But looking back helps me recognize the progress I sometimes miss when I’m busy working.

What keeps me going is helping someone understand their finances, get their business organized, or feel more confident about their next step. That’s the work I wanted to make more room for through TaxSpace and, now, Prospera.

As TaxSpace Prospera Center takes shape, I’d love to connect with people who want to help whether by volunteering their time, sharing their expertise, partnering on workshops, or introducing us to potential sponsors and funders. If this work matters to you, send me a message. I’d love to talk.

Today, I’m grateful for my time at Penn, for my team, and for everyone who has trusted and supported me along the way.

Could your business prove what it owned yesterday if the office flooded tonight? 🌧️

Most business owners think about insurance after a disaster. But there’s another question that matters just as much:

Can you prove what you lost?

If your office, storefront, vehicle, or equipment were damaged tomorrow, would you have records showing what your business owned and what you paid for it?

A little preparation now can make insurance claims, disaster assistance, and tax reporting much easier later.

Consider keeping digital records of:

Photos or videos of equipment and business property

Receipts and purchase invoices

Computers, printers, furniture, and other fixed assets

Business vehicles and equipment

Insurance policies

Cloud backups of important financial records

An up-to-date fixed asset list in your accounting system

Quick tip: Take a video today. Walk through your office or business and record your equipment, furniture, electronics, inventory, and other valuable property. Save it somewhere secure in the cloud not only on your phone.

Good bookkeeping isn’t just about taxes. It’s also about protecting the business you’ve worked to build.

What a busy Friday. Had a visit at my alma mater, the Penn Law school. Then went to see the rising of the Puerto Rican Flag at city hall. Saw the portal for the first time. It was so cool. Then met Mima for lunch. Mima just started a new job at the Comcast center performing at the Sphere for the How to Train a Dragon exhibit. Lastly a few zoom calls in between. 🤪 Happy Friday!!!
