Happy Labor Day from HM Tax Advisors!

Today is about recognizing the people who show up, work hard, build businesses, serve their communities and keep everything moving.

As a small business, we know firsthand that nothing gets built by one person.

We're incredibly thankful for our HM team and the work they put in every day — especially during those times of year when the days get long, the phones don't stop ringing and the tax returns seem to multiply overnight. 😂

We're also grateful for all of the hardworking business owners, employees, tradespeople, first responders, healthcare workers, teachers and everyone else we're fortunate enough to call clients and friends.

Whatever you do for a living, hopefully today you get a chance to do a little less of it. 😂

💡 Here's something we wish more people understood about taxes…

Some of the best tax planning happens months before you file the return.

Not in February.

Not when we're sitting together looking at numbers that already happened.

Now.

September is actually a great time to ask:

👉 Am I making more money than last year?
👉 Have my estimated tax payments kept up?
👉 Is my business having a better year than expected?
👉 Am I planning any large purchases before year-end?
👉 Am I taking advantage of the retirement options available to me?
👉 Has anything major changed in my life or business this year?

Because once December 31st passes, a lot of planning opportunities disappear with it.

We'd much rather have the conversation before there's a problem than explain the problem when we're preparing your return.

That's the difference between tax preparation and tax planning.

And there's still plenty of 2026 left to make a difference.

The unofficial last weekend of summer… and we're planning to make the most of it.

Because nothing says “relaxing holiday weekend” quite like staring at your phone for hours debating whether the guy you want will still be there with your next pick.

🎓 Parents of College Freshmen — SAVE THOSE RECEIPTS!

If you just spent the past week moving your first child into college, you probably learned two things:

1️⃣ Your kid owns WAY more stuff than you thought.

2️⃣ College is EXPENSIVE. 😳

The good news? Some of those college expenses may help you at tax time.

The American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) can be worth up to $2,500 PER eligible student, per year during the first four years of higher education.

And don't assume it's only about the tuition bill!

Depending on the circumstances, qualified expenses can include:

🎓 Tuition
📚 Required books
💻 Computers and equipment required for enrollment or attendance
📝 Certain required course materials and supplies

But here's an important one:

🚫 Room and board generally DOES NOT qualify for the education tax credit.

So before you throw away receipts or assume the college's tax form will tell us everything we need to know, keep good records of what you actually paid.

You'll generally receive a Form 1098-T from the school after the end of the year, but that isn't always the whole story.

And remember — scholarships, grants, 529 distributions and education tax credits can all interact with each other. How you pay those college expenses can matter.

If this is your family's first year dealing with college expenses, don't worry.

We'll help you sort it all out at tax time. 💙

You explain the entire situation.

They put you on hold to “research the account.”

🎶 More music.

CLICK.
