🎥 60 Seconds From My Desk: Rhode Island Refund Delays

One question we’ve been getting a lot lately is:

“Where’s my Rhode Island refund?”

If you’re still waiting, you’re definitely not alone.

The Rhode Island Division of Taxation has been delaying some refunds while they verify information reported on W-2s. This is part of their effort to combat identity theft and fraudulent tax returns.

What does that mean for you?

It means they may be comparing the wages and withholding reported on your tax return against information they receive directly from employers before releasing your refund.

In most cases, there’s nothing you need to do. It’s simply a matter of waiting for the verification process to be completed.

If Rhode Island needs additional information from you, they’ll typically send a letter requesting documentation.

Sunday night Ollie update…

Apparently corgis are bred to herd animals by nipping at their heels, which explains why Oliver has decided that everyone in our house is now part of his personal cattle operation.

So naturally, he has officially earned the nickname:
“The Olliegator.”

Tiny legs. Shark teeth. Unlimited energy.

The funniest part though?

His Instagram account is somehow growing faster than my tax business did when I first started HM Tax Advisors.

It took me years to build a client base…
Meanwhile Oliver posts one cute picture and gains followers while biting everyone’s ankles like a tiny furry velociraptor.

At this rate he’s going to start demanding:
• sponsorship deals
• a marketing manager
• and a treat budget larger than my advertising budget.

Well… somehow today is already the last day of May and here's a photo of me out in the wild and away from the office. Shocking, huh?

It feels like tax season just ended yesterday, summer is somehow already here, and 2026 is moving way faster than any of us expected.

For us at HM Tax Advisors, May is always an interesting month:
• catching our breath after tax season
• helping late filers
• handling notices and extensions
• meeting with clients for planning
• and finally getting a little time back with family

It’s also a reminder that taxes aren’t just a “January through April” thing around here. The best tax strategies usually happen long before next filing season ever begins.

Hope everyone has a great last weekend of May and a strong start to June.

And hopefully… maybe… we finally get some nice weekend weather.

Has anyone else noticed that it feels like every weekend lately has had terrible weather… but then Monday through Friday turns into absolutely perfect sunshine?

It’s like Mother Nature clocks out on Friday afternoon and says:
“See you all Tuesday.”

Meanwhile, all week long we’re sitting in the office looking outside thinking:
“This would’ve been a great Saturday.”

Hoping this weekend finally breaks the cycle a little.

Friday night plans are officially set.

I’m taking Meghan and Kira to go see Michael at the movies and honestly… I’m probably just as excited as they are.

Between tax season, business ownership, dance competitions, and the nonstop pace of life, sometimes the best nights are the simple ones — popcorn, a movie, and spending time together as a family.

Now the real question is…

Am I making it through the whole movie without falling asleep in the recliner seats?

One thing we’ve learned over the years: people wait too long to ask tax questions because they think they’re “too small.”

But honestly, some of the best planning opportunities start with simple conversations:

➡️ “Should I start an LLC?”
➡️ “Am I withholding enough?”
➡️ “Can I afford to retire?”
➡️ “Should I be making estimated payments?”
➡️ “Why do I owe this year?”

The earlier you ask, the more options you usually have.

And if you’re heading into the weekend stressed about taxes, bookkeeping, notices, or business planning… don’t let it sit in the back of your mind all summer.

Most people don’t know my first job was at Alex’s Restaurant in Seekonk when I was 12 years old.

My mom worked there as a cook, waitress and many other roles, and on Sundays I’d be in the back washing dishes, trying to keep up during the breakfast rush.

At the time it just felt like helping out and making a little money… but looking back, I learned a lot there early:

• Show up on time
• Work hard even when nobody’s watching
• Respect the people doing the tough jobs
• And understand that success usually starts with doing the small things well

I think a lot of who I am today — both personally and professionally — started in places like that.

Funny how life works. One day you’re washing dishes in Seekonk… and years later you’re running a business helping thousands of families and business owners.
