🔥Your Tax Refund Isn’t a Competition!

💰A tax refund is not a one-size-fits-all situation. Comparing your refund to someone else’s is like comparing apples 🍎 to oranges 🍊 it doesn’t make sense!

Here’s why:
1️⃣ Dependents: More dependents can mean more credits.
2️⃣ Income: Higher or lower earnings impact what you owe or get back.
3️⃣ Taxes Paid In: Your refund depends on how much you actually paid into the system.
4️⃣ Self-Employment: Gig economy workers often have a completely different tax situation.

💥 Instead of focusing on the size of your refund, focus on filing an accurate return!

🪴Your financial situation is unique…so is your tax refund.

🪴Don’t chase numbers. Chase compliance, accuracy, and long-term

Important Reminder: 1095-A Form Needed for Filing Taxes

If you received health insurance through the Marketplace, your 1095-A tax form is now ready. Even if you only had coverage for one day, enrolled but never used it, or forgot about it entirely, you must have the 1095-A form to file your taxes.

Without this form, we cannot electronically file your return.

If you know you enrolled in Marketplace insurance, take a moment now to:

Download the 1095-A form from your account online, or
Call the Marketplace to have the form sent to you if you’re unable to access it online.
Don’t wait—get ahead of the game before tax season gets too busy!

Last year, the 1095-A form was the #1 reason for tax return rejections, simply because many clients didn’t realize they needed the form or weren’t aware they had Marketplace coverage.

Please, please make sure to obtain your 1095-A form before filing your taxes. Let’s avoid unnecessary delays and get your return processed smoothly!

Can Your Clients File Taxes with a Last Paycheck Stub?

The answer is No, and it’s essential to guide your clients correctly.

According to IRS guidelines and third-party banking regulations, paycheck stubs cannot be used to file a tax return—it’s against the law. However, some clients may still ask, unaware of the risks involved. FYI: You can utilize a paycheck stub starting in Mid February utilizing a Substitute W2 when the clients have not been able to receive their W2.

Why You Should Advise Against It:

1️⃣ It’s Against IRS and Banking Rules: Filing with a paycheck stub violates compliance regulations.

2️⃣ Delayed Refunds: Using incomplete information can trigger income or ID verifications, delaying refunds for months.

3️⃣ Accuracy Issues: Paycheck stub and W-2 information often differ, leading to potential missed credits or deductions.

4️⃣ Audit Risks: Mismatched information increases the likelihood of an IRS audit, which could result in amendments, penalties, or higher taxes owed.

Educate your clients on the importance of waiting for their W-2s to ensure their returns are accurate, compliant, and processed smoothly. Taking the time to explain the risks helps you build trust and maintain compliance in your practice.

Emails have been sent out with important information and updates!

12/27/2024

As tax season approaches, keep a few key things in mind :

Filing your taxes using only your last pay stub instead of the official Form W-2 is not recommended and can lead to inaccuracies in your tax return.

The IRS advises taxpayers to use Form W-2, provided by employers, as it contains the official record of your annual earnings and tax withholdings.

Why Not Use a Pay Stub?

📌Incomplete Information: Your final pay stub may not include all necessary details, such as taxable fringe benefits or pre-tax deductions, leading to discrepancies.

📌Potential Errors: Filing with incorrect information can result in processing delays, the need to file amended returns, and possible penalties.

What If You Haven’t Received Your W-2?

Employers are required to send Form W-2 to employees by January 31. If you haven’t received it by mid-February, follow these steps:

1. Contact Your Employer: Ensure they have your correct address and inquire about the status of your W-2.

2. Reach Out to the IRS: If your employer doesn’t provide the W-2, contact the IRS at 800-829-1040 for assistance.

3. File Using Form 4852: As a last resort, if you cannot obtain your W-2, you can use Form 4852, “Substitute for Form W-2,” to estimate your wages and withholdings based on your final pay stub. However, this should only be done after exhausting other options and may delay your refund.
