Starting late **December 2025**, the **U.S. Postal Service changed how mail gets postmarked** — and it can affect deadline-sensitive mail like bills, tax returns, legal docs, and ballots.

**Here’s what’s different:**
• USPS now **dates mail based on when it’s *processed* at a facility**, not when you drop it in a mailbox.
• That means mail may get a **later postmark date** than the day you dropped it off — even by several days.
• Many federal and state rules (like IRS tax deadlines and election laws) still use the postmark date to judge whether something is “on time.”

**Why this matters to you:**
✅ If you mail something close to a deadline, a late postmark could lead to **late fees, penalties, or rejected filings** — even if you mailed it on time.

**Tips to avoid issues:**
📍 **Mail important documents early** — don’t wait until the deadline day.
📍 **Bring items to the post office counter** and ask for a **manual postmark**.
📍 Use **certified or registered mail** or other services that provide proof of mailing and acceptance.

IR-2025-128, Dec. 29, 2025 — The Internal Revenue Service today announced that the optional standard mileage rate for business use of automobiles will increase by 2.5 cents in 2026.
