September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month—the perfect time to rally around the goal of ending childhood cancer. Every day, more than 1,000 children worldwide receive this devastating diagnosis. Through our partnership with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, we’re helping fund critical research, advance new treatments, and support affected families. And in September, for every new financial plan delivered to a prospective client, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation will donate to Alex’s. Together, we can rewrite the story for children with cancer.

PROBABILITY, POSSIBILITY & CONSEQUENCE

To better understand financial planning, both possibility and probability are important concepts.

For example, a 35-year-old engineer has a very low probability of dying. Common sense and experience tell us the probability increases as they age.

However, it is possible that a 35-year-old will pass away. Again, common sense and experience show us this reality every day.

In my work, I've found it is often challenging for people to plan for something that has a very low probability of happening.

This is where another term, consequence, is helpful. If your car breaks down or your bicycle is stolen, this is a low consequence event for most middle-income families.

Simply put, it won't derail your life or bankrupt your family financially.

However, if a 35-year-old passes away unexpectedly, the consequences can be catastrophic.

Spouses and children may have to relocate. Mortgages may go unpaid. Education and retirement plans are no longer funded.

Some possibilities, though less probable, are simply too consequential to leave unprotected.
