Jerry Seinfeld Is Worth $1.1 Billion. So Why Does He Still Work So (Darned) Hard?

For the same reason you should—no matter what your net worth—if you want to live a fulfilling life.

“No soup for you!” “Yada, yada, yada.” “These pretzels are making me thirsty.” “Not that there's anything wrong with that.” “The sea was angry that day, my friends.” Seinfeld’s groundbreaking sitcom is still iconic and Jerry Seinfeld and co-creator Larry David are two of the most influential comic entertainers of all time. The experience of being literally on top of the entertainment world while heady, is also still incredibly lucrative and as a result Seinfeld is a three comma guy. So why do we still see him all over the place instead of just enjoying his riches? It’s part of the reason that drove him to success in the first place. Valuable lessons from Chairman Jerry.

Imagine you created a TV series that, along with the income you’ve generated from standup tours, movies, and other projects, has made you worth a reported $1.1 billion.

Would you still tour? Would you still develop new projects? Would you still work hard?

Jerry Seinfeld would.

And does.

Your Customers Are Constantly Sending You Vital Signs on the Health of Your Business. Are You Listening?

There’s a truism in business: your prospects are waiting to tell you how to sell them—all you have to do is ask. Well, the same is true with customers. While they want to be right about their choice to do business with you—after all, it’s about ego—you should be aware of how they really feel deep down. In this way you can cultivate them and even receive referrals from their good will. So how do you do it? They are laying down clues and there is a methodology to measuring the health of your business by taking stock of some key aspects of your relationship with customers.

How to make the most of what you put in your customer health index.

If you were a merchant in ancient Greece—or at least before the dawn of the internet—you had a fairly easy way of knowing how well your business was doing. Do your customers keep coming back? Are your sales higher than your expenses? Do customers tell their friends about you? If the answer to these questions was ‘yes’ then you were probably doing fine.

As a modern-day business owner, those simple metrics are still pretty core to having healthy relationships with your customers. But now, with the sheer amount of customer data that it’s possible to collect, there have never been more ways to quantify your brand’s relationship with its customers. So it’s hard to know what to focus on.

A self-made millionaire describes the 'financial waterfall' strategy she used to pay off six figures in debt and build wealth

As accountants, we tend to bend towards the conservative side of advising our clients about money management. Minimize risk unless it’s a calculated risk based on experience and education and don’t get caught in the squeeze of not enough capital. But sometimes you have to hear it direct from the source. Here’s a cautionary tale with a happy ending of one Rose Han who turned it all around, and how she did it. Great story.

Rose Han overcame six-figure debt by increasing income and controlling expenses.
She then built a seven-figure net worth through prudent investing.
The author and YouTuber shares her "financial waterfall," a 10-part wealth-building strategy.

The Ultimate Guide to Personal Productivity Methods

Think about your day. Doesn’t matter what day of the week it is, or whether you are at work or home. Like most, you’re probably uber-busy. And getting things accomplished just provides room in your day for other things to get done. So how do you manage? Many people employ a simple to-do list. You may even have it on your phone so it’s handy. But is that really the best way to manage your time and effort? Here is a complete guide to different systems you can use, depending on your real needs. Pick the one you want to try and… just do it.

You don't need a to-do list, you need a system you can trust.

The right productivity method can make a huge difference in your work. A friction-less workflow can take you from feeling overwhelmed, unfocused, and unproductive to feeling calm, in control, and prepared to take on even the biggest projects.

Customers Hate How Businesses Set Prices. Here’s the New Psychology of Pricing

There is no more challenging aspect of marketing than pricing. It defines value and positions companies and their products vis-à-vis their competitors. The advent of AI and technology itself has exacerbated the complexity by allowing for universal knowledge of competitive pricing and fostering pricing on-the-fly based on real-time supply and demand. It’s great for profitability when done correctly but also harbors confusion and distrust among buyers. Here’s some great tips on how to manage pricing today.

Dynamic pricing and greedflation: Customers don’t trust what things cost in our algorithmic age. How businesses can win the pricing game without sparking a backlash.

The Beginner’s Guide to Reading & Understanding Financial Statements

An accountant we know used to hold seminars on “How to Read Financial Statements” at a local university. It was held in one of those 300 seat lecture halls and every time he offered it, it was packed with business managers, and even CEOs. They recognized that while practically a lost art left up to the financial arm of the company, financial statements are a hotbed of knowledge for anyone in management who is making decisions about growth. There’s a reason why those 10-page case studies that form the foundation of Harvard Business School set up the case by telling a story up front… but the answers are invariably in the numbers found in the last few pages. In the financial statements. So is this article rudimentary? Perhaps. But maybe just take a look anyway and get a leg up on competitors that are too busy to look.

How innovation happens

Today innovation can take many forms within a business. From product development to hiring techniques to operational efficiencies to marketing, organizations that create the platform for innovation generally florish and outflank competitors on their way to success. To us, that’s pretty critical so how are you fostering innovation in your own organization?

Innovation is like a garden — you need to create an environment where it can flourish.
When you live and work in Silicon Valley and talk about it with people who don’t, you get used to a look in their eyes that begs, “What’s the secret sauce?” People know it’s where innovation happens, and many want to know how they can make it happen where they work, too.

Burnout is an operations issue

Do companies create their own burnout rates? With organizations facing increasing pressure by stakeholders to foster more profits and cut more costs, are we as a business society wearing down our workforce to levels that are unsustainable and actually negatively affect productivity and thus profitability? How much is the cost and what can we do about it?

Collectively, we need to fix the bottlenecks where burnout actually thrives. Burnout has quietly become the norm in today’s workplace, rising at alarming levels. Yet most organizations still assume burnout as an individual issue that could be solved with resilience workshops, wellness apps, or additional resources such as PTO/vacation time. In my experience as an HR leader and culture change strategist in workplace mental health, adding additional resources can be part of the broader strategy to support employee burnout; however, they do not proactively prevent it from happening in the first place.
