Today we learned of the passing of our long time client, Mel Kreines. Mel’s law practice shared many clients with us, so many of you reading this knew Mel.

Mel was a well respected attorney with an intimidating presence. His deep voice and linebacker physique, combined with his legal prowess made him someone you wanted on your side and dreaded if he was your opposition.

What made Mel so unique to me was the man beneath the persona. Watching my kids visiting him at his office while I worked was the true testament of who Mel was. Seeing them on the lap of his expensive suits, messing his perfectly coiffed hair and them all laughing and playing together showed the heart of the “tough guy” lawyer. Mel bringing his baseball mitt in so he could have a catch in the parking lot with my boys. My kids anxiously awaiting my next monthly visit so they can see Mel again. That is the Mel Kreines who I’ll remember as such a special man.

During the almost 30 years I knew and worked with Mel, there were times he’d give me advice. One thing he said is don’t become friends with your clients. It makes things more difficult from a business sense. Well, I guess I didn’t always take your advice. Goodbye my friend. RIP. We were lucky to know you.

We are so proud of our long time client and friend, Jennifer Gould, who was featured on Entertainment Tonight, for her spectacular decorating of the A-list Robin Roberts wedding this past weekend. Jen has become known across the country, as well as places like Jamaica, for her breathtaking, one of a kind party designs.

It is exciting to experience the growth of Jen’s family business, and we look forward to continuing to provide financial counsel to her as her brand grows rapidly.

Part of servicing our clients to the best of our ability is to understand their needs and adapt our philosophies and theirs. When Rheumatology Associates of Long Island told me Thursday was Luau Day and come prepared, it was obvious what needed to be done.

Tax Season is here!! As you begin to receive and compile your 2021 tax papers, you should look for correspondence from the IRS with regard to any advanced Child Tax Credits (Letter 6419) and the 3rd Economic Impact Payment (Letter 6475) received. The IRS will report to you the amount(s) you received and these amounts must be reconciled on your 2021 tax return. If you do not have the IRS letter(s), you may visit IRS.gov and create an account where you can access these amounts. Not reporting these amounts properly will delay the IRS's processing of your return and potential refund.

CHECK YOUR ECONIMIC IMPACT PAYMENTS

Commonly referred to as stimulus payments, there were 2 rounds of these made. Depending on your income, you could have received as much as $1200 per taxpayer and $500 per child under 17 for the "EIP #1" and $600 per taxpayer and $600 per child under 17 for the "EIP #2"

While this money is not taxable to you, it may be important to report it on your 2020 tax return. The amount received was actually an advance of a 2020 Recovery Rebate tax credit. If you did not receive the full advance, you may be entitled to additional money when filing your 2020 return, so the actual advance you received is important.

If you are not sure how much your received, you can go to https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment to get the information. You will need to enter your Social Security number, Date of Birth, Street Address and Zip Code.

Use Get My Payment to get information about your payment status and payment type.

IRS 2020 FILING DELAYS

The IRS has just announced that they will not be opening 2020 filing until February 12, 2021. This is the latest start of a tax filing season yet. Tax returns can still be prepared prior to that date, but returns can not be processed until that date, at the earliest. This will cause a delay in refunds to the typical early filer.

As of now, there has been no change in the filing due date of April 15, 2021.
