Your cash balance is not a cash-flow plan. It's a photograph — and photographs are almost useless when the road ahead changes every week.

I've watched healthy companies get into trouble because leadership saw a big balance, felt safe, and committed to hiring, inventory, equipment, or a deal without seeing the timing underneath it.

A real cash plan tells you when payroll, taxes, debt service, and vendor bills actually clear, which receipts are truly collectible, and what happens if a major project slips 30 days.

That's why I start every engagement with a rolling 13-week cash forecast. It gives the CEO time to make choices while choices still exist.

If your cash conversation starts and ends with the bank balance, let's talk. Message CFO Express or email [email protected].

A forecast is not a plan.

A forecast says what may happen. A plan says what you'll do if it does.

Most leadership teams have a budget, a variance report, and a forecast that gets revised when reality catches up. What's usually missing are the triggers: when to hire, hold spend, borrow, accelerate, or change course.

When I build a forecast, it shows three things: the base case, the downside case, and the action case — which decision happens at which threshold. That's when a forecast stops being a finance document and becomes a leadership tool.

The better question isn't "Can we afford it?" It's "What has to remain true for this to work — and what do we do if it isn't?"

If that's a conversation your team needs, message CFO Express.

A good CFO doesn't say no. A good CFO helps you understand what has to be true for yes to work.

The stereotype is finance as the department that slows everything down. That isn't strategic finance.

Strategic finance helps the CEO make better bets: it sizes the capital required, tests the assumptions, models the downside, and builds a decision framework that keeps options open.

Sometimes the answer is no. More often it's "yes, if" — yes, if the cash plan supports it; yes, if we can deliver at the target margin; yes, if the raise starts before the runway forces it.

If your next decision involves growth, capital, a transaction, or an exit, let's make the "yes" investable. Message CFO Express.

International growth isn't just a sales plan. It's an entity, tax, cash, compliance, and reporting plan — whether leadership admits it or not.

A company can win international business fast and still build a structure that's painful to unwind: the wrong entity setup, unclear transfer pricing, unrecovered VAT, or no clean way to consolidate results across markets.

I've worked with entities in Switzerland, Ireland, and Belgium and supported systems deployments across roughly 47 countries. International scale creates opportunity, but the complexity has to be designed, not discovered.

CFO Express puts financial structure underneath commercial momentum — so growth is durable, measurable, and financeable. Expanding abroad? Send us a message.

Public-company rigor starts before you need it.

Waiting for a capital raise, an acquisition, or an audit to build financial discipline is like tuning the engine on race day.

Private companies don't need every public-company process. They need the ones that make the business credible: a timely, reconciled close; clear revenue-recognition policies; forecasts tied to operating drivers; and real governance around cash and approvals.

I've held senior finance roles in six public companies and helped take four public. The lesson: rigor isn't bureaucracy when it makes decisions faster, capital cheaper, and diligence less painful.

CFO Express brings the useful parts of that playbook to growing private companies. Message us to learn more.

Customer concentration is an exit problem before it's a sales problem.

A company can be growing and profitable and still carry a valuation risk hiding in plain sight: too much revenue, margin, or cash tied to too few customers.

That's not an argument against big accounts. It's an argument for understanding the dependency — how much margin and cash the relationship really represents, what the contract protects, whether the customer is profitable after full cost to serve, and what happens if payments slow.

Buyers and lenders will ask these questions. You should be asking them first.

Unmanaged concentration is a discount waiting to happen. CFO Express can help you manage it — message us.

Investors aren't buying your past. They're underwriting your next 18 months.

Historical performance earns attention. A credible forward plan earns capital.

When you're preparing to raise, the question isn't just "What were last year's results?" It's whether leadership can explain what the next dollar of capital unlocks, how long it lasts, which assumptions drive the model, and what happens if the plan slips.

I've supported capital formation from a $20 million Series A environment to a $40 million acquisition raise. Sophisticated investors expect the story and the model to be one coherent argument.

If the model can't answer the hard questions, you're not ready for the easy ones. CFO Express can help — send us a message.

Price is the easiest lever — and usually the wrong one.

When margin is under pressure, raising prices feels decisive. Sometimes it's necessary. But price is rarely the only problem, and often not the first one to solve.

Before changing price, understand what's underneath: which customers and offerings really generate margin, where delivery cost has crept up, which discounts are eroding value, and what rework and slow collections are costing you.

A price increase can mask operational inefficiency just long enough for it to become permanent.

CFO Express helps companies find the margin opportunity that a single gross-margin percentage hides. Message us to dig in.

Bonding capacity is a growth constraint.

For a contractor, a full pipeline isn't the same as the capacity to take the work. Sureties and lenders don't evaluate potential — they evaluate reporting discipline, working capital, backlog quality, and WIP accuracy.

In one construction engagement, we cut the close from roughly 50–60 days to 30 and doubled bonding capacity. That wasn't an accounting exercise. It expanded the work the company could pursue.

Is your WIP accurate enough to support the story you're telling your surety? Does your backlog represent profitable, financeable work?

If bonding is limiting your next stage, CFO Express can help build the visibility that earns confidence. Send us a message.

An acquisition model needs a 100-day plan. If value creation starts after close, it's already late.

Most deal models calculate synergies and overhead savings. Few turn those assumptions into an accountable operating plan for the first 100 days — and that's where value is protected or quietly lost.

A useful plan names the systems that can't fail on day one, the people and customers whose confidence must be kept, the cash exposures that need daily visibility, and who owns each synergy.

The best buyers don't wait for the first integration meeting to figure out how the businesses will run together. They know before the purchase agreement is signed.
