We are incredibly proud to celebrate our high school interns: Amyja Woodruff, Kimannee Stevenson-Cushingberry and Elon Allen, for completing the internship and earning their Intuit QuickBooks ProAdvisor Level 1 Certification!

The internship was designed to introduce students to the accounting profession, provide hands-on exposure to real-world accounting concepts, and help them build confidence in their ability to succeed in challenging environments. Watching these students grow throughout the experience has been truly inspiring.

The QuickBooks ProAdvisor Level 1 Certification provides students with a nationally recognized credential that documents their progress and validates foundational accounting and bookkeeping knowledge. These skills can create opportunities to generate supplemental income through entry-level bookkeeping or small business support services while also serving as a strong foundation for future studies and long-term careers in accounting and related professions.

A special thank you to our guest speakers, Jones who conducted a special session on personal finance and Judge Allen Francine Taylor who covered professional etiquette and personal branding. Thank you for pouring into our students, sharing your experiences, and demonstrating the many ways accounting and professional service can be used to make an impact in our communities. Your guidance, encouragement, and willingness to invest in the next generation helped make this experience meaningful.

We believe exposure creates opportunity! This is only the beginning for these talented young leaders.

If you’re a physician who owns and operates your own practice, there may be a valuable state tax credit worth exploring. Programs like this are designed to support independent practices while helping reduce overall tax liability.

Beyond the potential tax savings, credits like these can free up cash flow to reinvest back into your business—whether that’s hiring staff, upgrading equipment, or expanding patient access in your community.

Every situation is different, so it’s important to review eligibility and how it applies to your specific structure.

🚨 It’s Tax Day! 🚨

If you’re not quite ready to file, don’t panic — you still have options. You can request an extension to give yourself additional time to get everything together without the stress of rushing.

An extension gives you until October to file your return, which can be helpful if you’re waiting on documents, need more time to review your information, or just want to make sure everything is accurate.

Just keep in mind: an extension to file is not an extension to pay. If you expect to owe, it’s important to submit an estimated payment today to avoid penalties and interest.

: IRA contributions are one of the few tools that let you go back and impact last year’s taxes.

That creates a unique planning opportunity:
• Reduce taxable income after year-end
• Potentially drop into a lower tax bracket
• Offset other income (like bonuses or side income)

Ask your tax preparing about the possibility of an additional deduction if you take action before the 15th.

: Worker classification is not a choice—it’s a compliance determination based on the facts and circumstances. It may vary depending on the agency reviewing it:

DOL: Applies the economic reality test

IRS: Uses the common law control test (who controls how, when, and where the work is performed)

States: Often apply stricter ABC test

You cannot arbitrarily classify someone as an independent contractor or an employee—the classification must be supported across all applicable standards.

For more information, see the Department of Labor’s proposed update: https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/flsa/misclassification/2026rulemaking.

At A Total Solution CPA & Consulting Services, we help clients take a defensible, well-documented approach to worker classification to ensure compliance at every level.

: Yes — you can legally pay your kids and potentially lower your tax bill.

If you’re a sole proprietor (or a qualifying parent partnership), hiring your child for legitimate work in your business can:

Create a deductible business expense
Reduce income subject to self-employment tax
Shift income to your child’s lower tax bracket
Potentially avoid F**A taxes if under age 18

In many cases, if structured properly, your child may owe little to no federal income tax thanks to the standard deduction.

The key? Legitimate work. Reasonable pay. Proper payroll setup. Documentation.

There’s something special about watching a student work through their first journal entries and truly understand the relationship between debits and credits.

This moment captures one of our high school interns putting in the work to grow their knowledge and confidence in accounting.

At A Total Solution CPA & Consulting Services, Inc., we find great joy in opportunities where supporting our profession and investing in the youth in our communities intersect. Through our highschool internship program, ATS provides opportunities to learn, ask questions, and build real-world skills.

The future is bright when curiosity meets mentorship.

: Side Hustle Reporting

Side hustle income is still taxable — even if you didn’t receive a 1099. Whether you drove for Uber, delivered for DoorDash, sold products on Etsy, or took payments through Venmo — the income must be reported.

If you earn money outside of a W-2 job, it’s generally considered self-employment income and may be subject to both income tax and self-employment tax. The Internal Revenue Service receives copies of many 1099 forms — but even if you don’t receive one, the reporting requirement still applies. The good news is expenses incurred to earn the income like mileage, supplies, and/or the business use of your home office can reduce the related tax liability.

Tracking income and expenses throughout the year makes tax season much smoother!

Child Tax Credit vs Dependent Credit: A dependent does not automatically qualify for the $2,200 Child Tax Credit. To qualify, the child must be under age 17 at year-end and meet IRS eligibility requirements.

Dependents who don’t qualify may still be eligible for the Credit for Other Dependents (up to $500). Income limits can also impact both credits under guidelines set by the Internal Revenue Service. The credit begins to phase out at $200,000 ($400,000 if filing a joint return).

Understanding the difference can prevent surprises at filing time!
