We spend a lot of time talking about what we’re supposed to do with money.

Save more. Spend less. Invest. Plan. Prepare.

Those things can matter. But there’s another question worth asking:
What do I actually want my money to do?

Maybe it’s giving you more time with your family. Creating choices in your career. Caring for land that’s important to you. Traveling. Supporting people or organizations you care about. Retiring with more flexibility. Helping your children. Or simply feeling less worried about the future.

Your answers don’t have to look like anyone else’s.
Money is personal because life is personal.

She didn’t just take a seat at the table. She helped open the door for other women.

Meet Mary G. Roebling (1905–1994), a trailblazer in American banking and finance.
In 1937, following her husband’s death, Mary became president of Trenton Trust Company in New Jersey, a remarkable achievement for a woman at a time when financial leadership was overwhelmingly male.

She went on to become a nationally recognized banking executive and, in 1958, became the first woman to serve as a governor of the American Stock Exchange.
But Mary’s story isn’t just about breaking barriers. She advocated for women’s economic opportunities and encouraged greater participation by women in business and finance.

Her legacy reminds us that women belong in every financial conversation, not just as participants, but as decision-makers and leaders.

At Her Money Circle, we believe financial confidence grows when women have opportunities to learn, ask questions, share experiences, and support one another.

Mary helped open doors. It’s up to us to keep them open for the generations that follow. 💜

Sometimes “getting your finances together” sounds like a project that requires a free weekend, three spreadsheets, a filing cabinet and an entirely different personality. 😅

It doesn’t.

You can start much smaller.

Ask your spouse a question you’ve been avoiding. Find the login to an account you haven’t checked lately. Look at your beneficiary. Ask what a financial term means. Write down one question for your advisor. Tell someone what you want to happen to something that’s important to you.

One conversation. One question. One decision.

Small actions count. 💜

Here’s your HMC homework, and we promise it’s manageable. 😉

Pick one thing that matters to you.

Then work through the questions.

You don’t have to organize your entire estate this afternoon. You don’t have to know every answer. You don’t even have to finish the checklist.
Just identify one conversation you need to have.

That’s enough for today. 💜

We spend a lot of time thinking about acquiring things.

We spend considerably less time talking about what we eventually want to happen to them.

This month at Her Money Circle, we’re asking:
What happens to the things that matter?

Maybe it’s land. A home. A business. Jewelry. Family photos. A collection. Something sentimental, or something valuable that comes with responsibility.

We’ll talk about what we hope happens, what our families may assume will happen, and why sometimes the first step isn’t paperwork.

It’s a conversation.

Kassi’s newest article starts with a simple statement:
You can’t make more land.

But the bigger conversation applies to much more than land.

What do you want to preserve? What do you want to pass down? Does your family know? And, this is important, have you asked whether they want the same thing?

It’s a timely read before our HMC conversation Wednesday.

“You can’t make more land.”

For Kassi, those words aren’t theoretical. She grew up here in the Shenandoah Valley surrounded by farms, family land and the memories created on them.
But wanting land to remain part of a family’s story doesn’t automatically mean everyone agrees on what should happen next.

Who wants it? Who can maintain it? What matters most about its future? What if the next generation has a different vision? And what legal, tax or conservation questions should be explored?

Kassi shares why those conversations matter in:
Generational Memories: If You Don’t Plan for the Land, the Land Gets Planned for You

We spend years building a life. A home, a family, a career, savings, traditions, and memories.

But how often do we talk about what happens next?

This week, we’re recognizing National Retirement Security Week and National Estate Planning Awareness Week, two important reminders that planning isn’t just about money. It’s about the people and things that matter to us.

Retirement planning asks: How will I support the life I want to live?

Estate planning asks: What do I want to happen to the things I’ve built, and do the people I love know my wishes?

Both are about preparing for the future, but neither needs to start with a complicated financial conversation.

Sometimes it starts around the dinner table.

💬 Here’s a question worth asking your family:

“What’s something important to you that you’d want our family to understand or remember?”

You might be surprised where that conversation leads. 💚

Today is International Day of Rural Women, and here in the Shenandoah Valley, that feels especially worth recognizing.

Women help run farms. Manage businesses. Keep household finances moving. Care for family members. Maintain land. Make decisions. Preserve traditions. And often carry an enormous amount of knowledge about how everything works.

Some of that work shows up on a balance sheet. A lot of it doesn’t.

Today we’re celebrating the women helping sustain families, farms, businesses and communities. 💜

A house. A family business. Grandma’s jewelry. A piece of land. Photo albums. A recipe box. A cabin. Something you’ve collected for 30 years.

What do you own that means more to you than its financial value?

And here’s the harder question:
Does anyone else know what you hope eventually happens to it?

That’s part of the conversation we’re having at Her Money Circle this month.

One thing we talk about often at Her Money Circle: you don’t have to know everything about money to start asking good questions.

Retirement is a great example.
There are ages and milestones tied to retirement accounts, Social Security, Medicare and other financial decisions, and understanding what’s coming can make those conversations a little less intimidating.

Kassi put together this Retirement Roadmap for Being Financial to help explain some of the milestones you may encounter along the way. 👇

What’s one retirement question you wish someone would explain in plain English?

When can I retire?

It’s an important question, but it usually leads to several more.
When can I access my retirement accounts? When does Social Security enter the picture? What happens around 65 with Medicare? When do required minimum distributions begin? And how early should I start putting all of these pieces together?

In our newest article, Kassi Redifer walks through some of the financial milestones that may appear on the road to retirement.
