๐Ÿ“Š Is AI replacing accountants? No...but it helps!

After 26 years in practice, I have seen our profession transform many times, but today's conversation around AI misses an important point: the real challenge is not whether AI will replace CPAs. It is whether we can continue building the next generation of CPAs while the profession faces a growing talent shortage.

A few realities:

๐Ÿค– AI is exceptionally good at automating repetitive tasks, reducing errors, and freeing professionals to focus on higher-value work.

๐Ÿ“‰ More than 300,000 accountants and auditors left the profession between 2019 and 2022, while firms continue to struggle to find qualified talent.

๐ŸŽ“ The path to CPA licensure still requires significant education, examination, and training, yet access and affordability remain growing concerns for many students.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ The fundamentals still matter. Many of us learned our craft through reconciliations, depreciation schedules, and detailed review work. As AI handles more routine tasks, mentorship and professional development become even more important.

๐Ÿ” The future of accounting isn't AI versus accountants. It's experienced professionals using technology to enhance judgment, improve accuracy, and deliver greater value to clients.

As a CPA, business owner, and mother of five, I continue to believe accounting is one of the most versatile and rewarding professions available. But if we want a strong future, we need to invest in the pipeline, support young professionals, and recognize the value that licensed CPAs bring to businesses, nonprofits, governments, and communities every day.

What changes do you think would have the greatest impact on attracting the next generation of accounting professionals?

๐ŸŒŽ Thinking about living, working, retiring, or obtaining residency abroad?

At MAS LLC, we are seeing an increasing number of clients explore opportunities outside the United States. While the lifestyle, family, and immigration considerations often take center stage, the tax implications can be just as important. ๐Ÿ’ผโœˆ๏ธ

In a new article authored by Jessica Irving Marschall, CPA, we examine the U.S. tax framework that continues to apply to American citizens and green card holders living overseas, including:

๐Ÿ“‹ Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE)
๐Ÿ’ฐ Foreign Tax Credits and treaty considerations
๐Ÿฆ FBAR and FATCA reporting requirements
๐Ÿ“ˆ Foreign accounts, PFICs, and other common compliance challenges
๐Ÿ“ IRS Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures
โš–๏ธ Section 877A expatriation tax and "covered expatriate" rules

The article also provides an overview of five countries frequently discussed by our clients:

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Canada
๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ท Costa Rica
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช Ireland
๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ด Colombia
๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Spain

Each destination presents unique immigration pathways, tax systems, treaty protections, and planning opportunities. Understanding how these local rules interact with the U.S. worldwide tax system is essential before making a move.

๐Ÿ”‘ One of the key takeaways: relocating abroad is both an immigration project and a tax planning project. Proper planning before establishing residency can help avoid costly surprises, compliance issues, and unnecessary tax exposure later.

Today I had the opportunity to attend this event on behalf of all four of my companies, as well as a new software development company where I serve as CFO and founder alongside a business partner with decades of government contracting experience.

I came to Richmond to meet smart people, build meaningful connections, and learn how we can contribute to solving real challenges at both the state and federal levels.

The Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce has been an incredible resource for connecting with talented professionals across industries, including outstanding faculty, students, and alumni from the finance and accounting programs at Virginia State University and VCU.

Richmond continues to be a place where great ideas and great people come together. I am excited about the brilliant colleagues and new friends I met today and look forward to seeing where these conversations lead.

And a friendly reminder to all the college students out there: becoming a CPA is actually pretty darn cool, even if we proudly embrace our nerdiness!

Rental property owners often focus on maximizing deductions but overlook one of the most important tax questions:

Should an expenditure be expensed today or capitalized and depreciated over time?

The difference can mean an immediate deduction this year or waiting 27.5 years to fully recover the cost of a residential rental property improvement.

In my latest article, I walk through:

โ€ข The difference between deductible repairs and capital improvements
โ€ข The Betterment, Adaptation, and Restoration (BAR) test
โ€ข The De Minimis Safe Harbor
โ€ข The Safe Harbor for Small Taxpayers
โ€ข The Routine Maintenance Safe Harbor
โ€ข Common audit triggers and documentation best practices

Understanding these rules can help landlords avoid overpaying taxes while maintaining compliance with IRS regulations. Most rental activities are reported on Schedule E, making proper classification of expenditures critical for tax planning and audit defense.

Another great evening with what I truly think is one of the best and most engaging ASA chapters anywhere. Always a good time when you get a room full of valuation professionals together discussing complex markets, fair value, and global trends.

Even better that my friend and colleague Sarah Reeder of ISA and AAA fame joined me for the event.

We heard a very informative presentation from Peter Tropper on private equity and emerging market valuation work. One interesting takeaway was how differently Fair Value can look across global markets. We may all technically follow the same IVSC framework, but emerging markets often seem to involve far more Level 3 inputs and a very different audit environment than what we typically see in the U.S.

Love this group and these conversations.

And yesโ€ฆ my eyes are closed in one of the photos, but I decided that was not a good enough reason not to post them anyway. ๐Ÿ˜‚

This Memorial Day, MAS LLC, The Green Mission Inc., GM-ESG and Probity Appraisal Group pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Their courage, dedication, and selflessness have protected the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy every day. We are deeply grateful to all who have served and especially mindful of the families carrying the legacy of those we have lost.

As we spend time with our families and communities this weekend, may we also take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and remember those who gave everything for our nation.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.
