You could have $1 million saved for retirement and still be overlooking something important: taxes.

Not all retirement accounts are taxed the same way.

Money in a traditional 401(k) or IRA is generally treated differently when withdrawn than money in a Roth IRA or taxable investment account.

That means two people with identical savings balances could have very different amounts available to spend.

A good retirement plan looks at more than how much you've saved. It also considers where that money is held.

Two couples want the same $80,000 retirement lifestyle. Why might one need significantly more savings?

The answer comes down to retirement income.

If Social Security and a pension cover $50,000 annually, investments only need to provide the remaining $30,000.

But without a pension, those investments have a much bigger job to do.

This is why retirement planning isn't one-size-fits-all, and why the amount you've saved only tells part of the story.

10/27/2026

Thinking about retirement? Start with these three questions.

How much will your retirement lifestyle cost?

How much reliable income can you expect from sources like Social Security or pensions?

And how much of the difference will your investments need to cover?

These answers can tell you much more about your retirement readiness than simply looking at your savings account.

Is there a magic number you need to retire?

Not exactly. Having $1 million or $2 million saved doesn't automatically mean you're financially ready.

What really matters is how much income your retirement needs to provide and whether your financial plan can support the lifestyle you want.

Let's look beyond the savings balance and focus on what retirement actually costs.

10/22/2026

Is $1 million enough to retire comfortably? What about $2 million?

The truth is, having a certain amount saved doesn't automatically mean you're ready for retirement.

Two people can have the exact same retirement savings and need completely different financial plans.

Why? Because retirement isn't just about how much you've saved. It's about how much income you'll need, where that income comes from, and how long your money needs to last.

Social Security, pensions, inflation, healthcare costs, and taxes can all change your retirement picture.

In this video, we break down how to evaluate your retirement savings and the three questions that can help you determine whether you're financially prepared.

Before you decide whether you have enough to retire, make sure you're asking the right questions.
