Here's a scenario we see more often than you'd think:
A contractor wraps up a solid month. Good revenue, steady work, happy clients. Then they look at the bank account and think... where did it all go?

The answer is almost always in the details — the jobs that quietly ate the margin. Our latest blog post is for every business owner who's ever had that moment.

Learn more about job costing and how it works here: https://cpataxteam.com/blog/job-costing-101-are-you-actually-making-money-on-each-job/

You landed the contract. You did the work. The invoice got paid. But here’s the question most small business owners never stop to ask: did you actually make money on that job? Revenue coming in the door feels good, but revenue and profit are two very different things. Without a system to track wha...

Every Monday this June, we're busting the tax myths that cost small business owners the most.

First up: "𝗜𝗳 𝗜 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳𝗳."

We hear this one ALL the time. And while you absolutely can deduct vehicle expenses, the IRS doesn't make it as simple as "write it all off."

Here's the quick version:
✅ Only business miles count — your commute doesn't
✅ You have to pick a deduction method
✅ Business-use percentage matters for every vehicle
✅ No mileage log = no deduction

Ever wonder when a side hustle stops being "just a hobby" in the IRS's eyes? Turns out, they have a 9-factor test for that, and how your activity gets classified affects whether you can write off your expenses or not.

We put together a breakdown of all 9 factors and what they mean.

Whether you’re selling candles on Etsy, freelancing on weekends, or flipping vintage furniture, there’s a question you’ll eventually need to answer: is this a hobby or a business? It might feel like a philosophical distinction, but to the IRS, it’s anything but. How they classify your activi...

Still trying to figure out whether your business needs a bookkeeper, a CPA, or both?

You're not alone. It's one of the most common questions small business owners ask, and the answer matters more than most people think.

We put together a full breakdown of the differences, real scenarios where each one matters, and the signs it's time to bring a CPA into the picture.

Learn more here: https://cpataxteam.com/blog/cpa-vs-bookkeeper-which-does-your-small-business-actually-need/

You started your business because you’re great at what you do, not because you love reconciling bank statements. So when it comes to managing your finances, how do you know whether you need a bookkeeper, a CPA, or both? It’s one of the most common questions small business owners ask, and one of ...

Cash vs. accrual accounting can change how you see your business finances.

Cash accounting shows money when it moves in or out of your bank account. Accrual accounting shows income when it’s earned and expenses when they’re incurred, even if payment happens later.

For growing businesses, that difference matters. The right method can give you a clearer picture of profitability, cash flow, and what your business actually owes or is owed.

Not sure which method fits your business? Talk with your CPA or advisor before making the switch.

Self-employed or running a small business? A SEP-IRA may be worth knowing about.

It allows tax-deductible employer contributions and can help business owners save for retirement while keeping the plan relatively simple and flexible.

Before opening or funding one, make sure you understand the contribution rules, employee requirements, and how it fits into your overall tax strategy.

S-corp owners, your salary matters.

If you take distributions but pay little or no W-2 wages, that can raise IRS questions.

Read the blog to learn what “reasonable salary” means and what factors to review each year.

For many small business owners, electing S corporation status can be a useful tax structure. S corporations generally pass corporate income, losses, deductions, and credits through to shareholders for federal tax purposes, helping avoid double taxation at the corporate level. However, S-corp tax tre...

Two weeks ago, our team had the pleasure of attending the 2026 Professional Association of Small Business Accountants - PASBA conference in San Antonio.

At the conference, our owner, Craig Hausz, was recognized for his dedication to the PASBA board and for being a Member Referral Champion, alongside others. Craig also had the opportunity to speak on the panel and lead Sales University at this year’s conference.

We are so honored to have gotten to take place in this year’s conference and to get to share our experience and expertise with other small business accounting firms. Thank you to everyone who helped make this week unforgettable!
