We're 2 months away from the end of 2026, which means now is the time to start looking for a tax person if you want/need one.

Don't wait until March 2027 to find a tax person for your 2026 taxes.

It'll be too late at that point.

Start looking early to find someone you truly feel good about.

Also give yourself plenty of time to gather the needed documents and information so your tax person can do good work come tax time next year.

If you find someone now they might be able to help you with some year end planning strategies as well to help lower your taxable income.

I take on a small number of new tax clients every year.

The clients I typically help are:

-Retired or close to it
-High earning W2 individuals and families (typically getting bonuses or equity compensation)
-1 person businesses making over $150k per year

If this is you and you are wanting some help with taxes feel free to schedule a time to talk with me.

Link is in the comments.

Most people making over $150k won't have the retirement they want.

Not because they "didn't make enough".

But because they didn't prioritize saving and investing.

You need to make saving and investing a priority to have the future you want.

No matter what.
Doesn't really matter how much either.

$100/month
$500/month
$1,000/month

You need to make saving and investing a priority.

Once you make it a priority a few things happen.

→ It becomes a habit
→ As a habit it becomes easier
→ Over time you begin to see the power of compounding growth

So start to prioritize saving and investing if you want to build a brighter future for yourself and your family.

Year end is still a time for tax planning.
Here's what I'm currently doing for clients...

→ Filling any gaps in estimated tax liability

I look at your most recent YTD paystubs, business revenue and expenses, investment income, rental income, RMDs, etc. and estimate what your tax liability may be.

If you're behind on what you may owe, we can make some moves to avoid any surprises come tax time.

This can include changing W2 withholding, changing 401k contribution amounts, making year end charitable gifts or simply making an estimated payment.

→ Retirement account audits

You want to make sure you've taken all necessary RMDs from your 401ks and IRAs and have the proper tax withholding taken from those RMDs

You also will want to have any Roth conversions you want done in 2026 completed by 12/31.

I also like to review performance and asset location of you retirement accounts, both pre-tax and Roth.

→ Tax loss harvesting in taxable accounts

Your taxable brokerage accounts may have losses that can be used to either offset other gains throughout the year from other investments or they can be used to reduce some taxable income.

I look for losses that can be "harvested" and utilized before year end for 2026.

Any unused losses can be rolled over into future years but they need to be realized now.

With recent market pullbacks it's a good time to see if there are any losses that can be used.

As year end approaches don't think that it's too late.

It's not.

Have you done any year end tax planning?

If your investments drop by -20%, you don't need a +20% return just to get back to where you were.

You need a +25% return to get back to where you were.

If you have $100k and it drops -20% down to $80k, a +20% return on that $80 will get you to $96k.

You'll need a +25% return to get back to $100k.

That's why it can take longer to recover from deep drops.

That's why it's important to manage downside risk, even if you have an appetite for risk.

That's why having a diversified portfolio is nice.

That's why managing your investments and paying attention to them is important.

If you have a Roth IRA or are putting money into a Roth IRA and you miss this step then you're making a huge mistake.

If you're money inside your Roth IRA isn';t invested you are missing a huge step in the process.

You probably heard that a Roth IRA is good to have because it is tax-free.

And what's not to like about it, tax-free growth is great.

But you have to actually invest that money inside your Roth IRA.

I see it A LOT.

Roth IRA with the entire balance sitting in cash.

You're putting $7k a year into your Roth IRA and then you think you're done.

But that money once it's in your Roth IRA just sits as cash until you invest it.

If it sits in cash then it won't grow.

And if it won't grow you're not getting any benefit from tax-free growth in it.

And missing out on years of growth can cost you.

So if you're putting money into your Roth make sure you get it invested, and get it invested correctly.

What kind of investor are you?
When things get rocky do you stay put or do you bail?

Staying invested is on the easiest ways to become a successful investor.

But getting out of the market and waiting for the right time to get back in is one of the worst things you can do to yourself.

Because you have to be "right" not once but twice.

You have to be right on when to sell and get out of the market (the top of the market), and you have to be right about when to get back in the market (the bottom of the market).

It is almost impossible to get these two things right.

It is a much better strategy to stay invested even through times of uncomfortable volatility and uncertainty.

Constantly worrying over what rate of return your investments get is dumb.

When you're building, what matters way more is how much money you’re investing.

Not what rate of return you get.

Now sure, you want to get a better return than the interest rate on your bank account.

But nit picking over 7.5% vs. 8% isn't very useful.

Increasing your annual saving from $1k to $12k will move the needle far more for you over the long term than splitting hairs over .5%

And look, if your financial success depends on getting .5% better return then something is wrong.

So instead of researching and analyzing investments over .3% expense ratios or .5% rate of return, focus more on your own personal savings rate and how you can increase that.

Roth conversions are a great way to potentially pass on more of your assets to your beneficiaries.

If your beneficiaries inherit your IRA or 401k, they still have to pay taxes on that money.

They don't pay an inheritance tax or anything like that but they do have to pay income tax on whatever they withdrawal from that account after they inherit it.

And they can't just leave the money in the account and withdrawal at their own pace.

They have to withdrawal everything from the account within 10 years.

So they WILL have to pay the tax sooner rather than later.

And depending on how old they and what their income is the tax hit can potentially be big.

BUT...

If they inherit a Roth IRA from you instead, they still have to withdrawal the money within 10 years but the withdrawals are tax-free.

That's where Roth conversions can be a powerful tool.

You can start converting your money from pre-tax to Roth.

You still have to pay income tax on whatever you convert to Roth.

But once it's in Roth it can give you (and your beneficiaries) tax-free withdrawals.

There's 2 important caveats to be aware of...

→ It's important to invest the money in the Roth IRA after you convert.

That way the money grows and you can take max advantage of the tax-free withdrawals.

→ Start converting sooner rather than later.

Waiting until you're 90 years old to consider Roth conversions doesn't leave you with much time on your side.

You leave yourself less time to convert more of your pre-tax money and less time for the converted money to grow.

Net Worth of $205k, am I screwed?

Stop comparing yourself to others, it really doesn't matter.

I see it all the time.

People look at:

Their 401k balance
Their IRAs
Their brokerage accounts
Their debt balance
Their Net Worth

And they'll ask me,
"Am I screwed?"
"What do others have in my situation?"
"I think I am behind."

All these questions are the wrong question to ask because they are rooted in comparing yourself to other people.

And the truth is it doesn't matter what others are doing.
It doesn't matter what other people's net worth is.
It doesn't matter what their 401k is worth.

What matters is where you are relative to what YOU want for your life.

To be able to answer a question like "Are you behind?" takes knowing things about what you want in your life.

"When do you want to retire?"
"How much do you want to spend?"
"Where do you want to live?"

Once you can answer those then you'll know if you are on track for YOUR goals or not.

And that's what matter.

So stop comparing yourself to other people.

Focus on your path, your goals and where you are relative to that.

Your IRA has the same bankruptcy protection as your 401k.

Many people don't know this but when you rollover your old 401k into a new rollover IRA, the rollover IRA has the same unlimited bankruptcy protection as your 401k.

Some people don't want to rollover their old 401k into an IRA simply because they think that they'll lose some of that protection.

But you don't.

401k to rollover IRA still retains this protection.

But something that the rollover IRA gives you over the 401k?

→ A much larger universe of investment options to choose from.

Inside the 401k you can only invest in the available options within the plan.

But in a IRA you typically can invest in (almost) anything.

Stocks
Bonds
Mutual Funds
ETFs
Structured Notes
Alternatives
CDs
Options

The possibilities inside your IRA are much more.
