If you own foreign assets and fail to properly address them in your estate plan, unexpected tax outcomes can result. For example, if you’re a U.S. citizen, your worldwide assets are potentially subject to federal gift and estate taxes, regardless of where you live or where the assets are located. So, if you own assets in other countries and the assets are subject to estate, inheritance or other death taxes in those countries, there’s a risk of double taxation. Call us at (719) 358-7134 to learn more about how to properly account for foreign assets in your estate plan.

Holding real estate within your operating company may lead to unfavorable tax outcomes and increased risk. For example, office or warehouse space owned by a C corporation is generally subject to double taxation when it’s sold. Or, if a customer is injured on company property, other business assets could be at risk. Separating real estate into its own entity, such as a limited liability company or partnership, can help reduce your exposure and provide greater flexibility for long-term planning. Call us at (719) 358-7134 to review your business structure and determine the best fit for your situation.

Final regulations released by the IRS stipulate that partnerships no longer need to provide detailed gain and loss information to selling partners by January 31. This deadline had become a contentious issue. The tax code requires that any portion of a partnership’s sale proceeds attributable to the partner’s share of unrealized receivables and inventory items be reported as ordinary income. Other sale proceeds are generally taxed as capital gains. But partnerships complained that the reporting deadline was hard to meet. Now, partnerships can provide such information to partners according to their natural end-of-year tax compliance cycle, on or with Schedule K-1. Contact us at (719) 358-7134 to discuss this and other tax filing requirements for partnerships.

When you’re busy running a business, it’s easy to overlook or dismiss the warning signs of financial distress. Rising employee turnover can signal internal strain. Cash flow issues may indicate slow collections or weak working capital practices. And sudden external shifts — such as interest rate volatility, cost increases or supply chain disruptions — can take a toll on otherwise healthy businesses. Supplementing your company’s year-end financial statements with interim reports or targeted agreed-upon procedures can help you spot problems early and take prompt corrective action. Contact us at (719) 358-7134 to learn more.

If you have unfiled tax returns, getting back on track may be easier than you think. But the longer you wait, the more costly it becomes. The IRS charges a failure-to-file penalty of 5% per month (up to 25%) of the unpaid tax. There’s also a separate failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% per month (up to 25%) of the unpaid tax. If both apply in the same month, the combined penalty is generally 5% per month. Returns over 60 days late are subject to a minimum penalty. Filing, even if you can’t pay in full, can reduce penalties and open the door to payment plans or other relief options. Call us at (719) 358-7134 for help.

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is one option available to support charities while reducing your taxable estate. By contributing cash or appreciated assets to a DAF, you also may qualify for an immediate charitable income tax deduction without needing to identify the specific charitable recipients right away. This gives you more time to research potential recipients or change the organizations you support from year to year. For families focused on legacy planning, DAFs can also help align heirs around charitable goals. Contact us at (719) 358-7134 for additional details.

A summer job is a great way for teens to earn extra cash, but it also comes with tax responsibilities. Anyone with self-employed income over $400, such as earnings from mowing lawns or babysitting, must file an income tax return and may owe self-employment tax. If a teen works for an employer that withholds payroll taxes, the filing threshold is higher: $16,100 for 2026. In this case, the teen usually won’t owe income tax and may receive a refund if taxes were withheld. Call us at (719) 358-7134 with questions.

Has administrative complexity discouraged your business from offering a 401(k) plan? Take a look at the safe harbor 401(k). The employer contribution obligation generally exempts the plan from nondiscrimination testing and other onerous administrative duties. Plus, this plan enables highly compensated employees to max out their contributions and can help attract and retain workers. Typically, employees are eligible to participate if they're age 21 or older and have at least one year of service. Call us (719) 358-7134 for details.
