NATIONAL DEVILED EGG DAY | NOVEMBER 2
National Deviled Egg Day features a favorite hors-d'oeuvre or side dish for parties, holidays, family reunions and potluck dinners. Deviled eggs shine as the star of the show each year on November 2nd.

This well-loved food wows guests during the holidays. Designers have even created specially designed carrying dishes and plates just so you can deliver your deviled eggs safely and in style. The deli section of the grocery store prepares packaged deviled eggs. They can even be found in some convenience stores, too.

Other names for this devilish dish include eggs mimosa, stuffed egg, salad eggs, or dressed egg. To make them, shell hard-boiled eggs, cut them in half, and scoop out the yolk. The yolk is mixed with other ingredients such as mayonnaise and mustard and then added back into the white. The possibilities are endless!

Eggs are quite versatile when it comes to making simple dishes elegant. The deviled egg is another example of taking the humble egg and transforming it with one or two simple ingredients. The final result steals the show. Colorful relishes, spicy peppers, pimentos or savory herbs, elevate deviled eggs to a spectacular and tasty morsel. Additionally, the variety offers entirely new flavor profiles demonstrating just how delicious this family favorite can be.

Adding Variety
Other approaches make them a little more creamy with sour cream. Do you like things a little more tart? Try adding vinegar to the filling. Depending on how you make them, it may be possible to satisfy just about every palate. From the traditional paprika garnish to crunchy bacon, or a little caviar, anchovy or herring, there is some devilish experimenting any cook can do.

The first known print reference referring to the term “deviled” about food, appeared in 1786. By the 19th century, devilish referred to spicy or zesty food. The term also applied to eggs prepared with mustard, pepper, or other ingredients stuffed in the yolk cavity.

NATIONAL CAT DAY
National Cat Day on October 29th is the purrfect day to give extra attention, treats, and appreciation to the independent, often hilarious, felines who grace our lives.

Cats make excellent, if opinionated, companions. They rarely miss you, but when they do, you certainly know it—usually in the form of a synchronized head-butt, a sudden case of zoomies at 3:00 AM, or a perfect loaf positioned exactly where you need to sit. National Cat Day is a celebration of all these unique cat quirks and the joy they bring.

National Cat Day also serves as an awareness day with a serious purpose to urges pet lovers to adopt from local shelters and reminds us that neutering and spaying our furry companions helps reduce the abandoned population.

Shelters are full of cats and kittens in need of forever homes. These feline fur babies come with as many personalities as they do colors and coats. They curl into our hearts and will just as quickly remind us they decide who they love. Whether they were born in the shelter, surrendered or abandoned, 3.4 million find their way to a shelter.

5 Tips for Pet Adoption
When considering the adoption of a furbaby, take your time. Each shelter animal will touch your heart, so be sure to find a life-long love.

Consider your lifestyle. Will you have time for an active kitten or will an adult cat be more to your pace?

Make multiple visits before making a choice. Sometimes, the purrfect cat will choose you.

Spend one-on-one time with the cat so you have some bonding meowments and her true personality comes through.

Do other members of your fur family need to be considered? If so, be sure to introduce them to be sure their personalities mesh.

When you bring your new family member home, have a space ready for him to decompress and adjust to his new abode. Don’t be surprised if he hides at first. This is normal cat behavior.

Contact a local rescue organization and offer to foster a cat or kitten. This temporary act saves two lives--the cat you foster and the one that takes its place in the shelter.

Be virtually impactful! Volunteer by helping a shelter manage its social media, write adoption descriptions, or share photos of adoptable cats online.

Watch a cat documentary, stream a live kitten cam, or simply spend an hour scrolling through the best feline content the internet has to offer.

First responders dedicate their lives to save lives. They are the people who run toward a crisis while the rest of the world flees. According to the Department of Homeland Security, 4.6 million career and volunteer first responders support the communities where they live. They are firefighters, police, emergency medical technicians (EMT), paramedics, and 911 operators. In an emergency, they're the first on the scene. These dedicated professionals answer the call when a crisis arises, often putting their own lives on the line.

Serving as a national day of gratitude, we pay tribute to their endless hours and around the clock service provided to their communities. As one of the most dangerous jobs in the country, the day also pays tribute to the fallen first responders. According to the CDC, 97 firefighters and 155 police officers die each year in the line of duty. Additionally, their rate of occupational injury is higher than the national average. Often, the very people saving lives are our neighbors, friends and family members. And their families know the price they pay for their dedication to the job.

And even though they are an integral part of our communities, their sacrifices go beyond the hours they work. They face high stress, often daily. The trauma they see wears on them both mentally and physically. Many experience Post Traumatic Stress. Long periods away from family add stress to their relationships, too.

National First Responders Day is also a call for action. First responders deserve our support. Through resources and awareness, first responders can live healthier more productive lives and pass their knowledge and skills on to the next generation of first responders, too.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL FIRST RESPONDERS DAY
The day provides you with an opportunity to recognize a first responder in your life. You might be surprised at how many you know. If their service is voluntary, you may only know about their day job. Offer to treat them to their favorite beverage or buy their next meal. Be supportive of their family, too. More importantly, support programs that improve services to first responders. Connect with a first responder who came to your rescue and thank them. Let them know you appreciate their dedication and sacrifice.

NATIONAL COLOR DAY
On October 22, we celebrate the vibrant and powerful role color plays in our lives on National Color Day! This fun National Day is a time to appreciate how color affects our moods, communicates ideas, and adds breathtaking beauty to our world.

Color is a silent language understood by all. Long before we had names for them, colors served a purpose, sending signals that are still deeply ingrained in us. A street light turns from green to yellow to red, directing the flow of traffic without a single word. The flush of color in a friend's cheeks can signal embarrassment, while the hue of a patient's skin can give doctors clues about their health.

NATIONAL APPLE DAY
National Apple Day falls on October 21 on the National Day Calendar as a day to celebrate all things apple! This food holiday is dedicated to growers in the UK and around the world to promote the rich cultural and historical significance of apples, as well as the importance of orchards and apple-related products in agriculture and heritage.

There are over 7,000 recognized apple varieties globally. However, the number of apple varieties in the world is vast and can be quite challenging to quantify precisely. There are thousands of apple cultivars, each with its own unique characteristics in terms of flavor, appearance, texture. Because we use apples are used for a variety reasons, such as fresh consumption, baking, or c***r production, new varieties are continuously being developed.

Not all apple varieties are widely known or commercially available. Many apple varieties are regional specialties, and their cultivation may be limited to specific areas or orchards.

Common Apple Varieties

NATIONAL DAY ON WRITING®
Each year on October 20th, we celebrate National Day on Writing® to encourage people to engage in daily writing and acknowledge the various roles writing plays in our lives. This creative day aims to change public understanding of writing by showcasing its various forms—creative, informative, academic, informal, or digital.

We all have experience writing, even if you don't think you're "good" at it. We use it to express our thoughts, our ideas, and to record information into a readable format. Whether you are a professional writer, someone who types all day behind a keyboard, or someone expressing yourself through poetry, writing is a way to record language across time and space. National Day on Writing® gives people around the world an opportunity to sit down and write.

Writing Through the Ages
Long before we had letters on keyboards, people used symbols to tell stories of their daily lives, as found in cave paintings dated around 35,000 BCE. During the Neolithic period, around 7,000 BCE, people in the Middle East used small clay tokens in different shapes to count and keep records of goods, like jars of oil or bushels of grain. Though this isn't considered writing, it was the first step, laying the foundation for writing by using a physical object to represent a specific quantity or idea.

Cuneiform, which means "wedge-shaped," was invented around 3400-3200 BCE by the Sumerians in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq). Starting as simple pictographs drawn on wet clay tablets to keep track of inventory and trade, Cuneiform evolved from marks made with a reed stylus into a complex system representing sounds and syllables.

Hieroglyphs, meaning "sacred carvings," are famously known as a type of writing used by ancient Egyptians beginning around 3200 BCE. This type of pictorial writing consists of logograms and phonograms that represent actual words and sounds. Though considered a complex form of writing, hieroglyphs can be deciphered by following the direction of the human and animal figures.

The alphabet originated around 1800 BCE with Semitic-speaking people in the Sinai Peninsula. An adaptation of hieroglyphs, the alphabet was created to represent the sounds of their own language. Around 1050 BCE, the Phoenicians refined that idea by creating a simple 22-character system. Each symbol stood for one basic consonant sound, making it easy to learn, teach, and adapt. By 800 BCE, the Greeks adopted the Phoenician alphabet and added vowel symbols. Eventually, the Roman Empire spread the Greek alphabet across Europe, etching the evolution of writing in stone!

Challenge yourself to tell a complete story in only six words.

Don't be intimidated by a blank page. set a timer for five minutes and write whatever comes to mind—your to-do list, a memory, or your goals for the day.

If you're a list-maker, try writing a poem. Haiku poetry is very similar to making a list, so this may be a great place to start!

Share what writing means to you, post a picture of your journal, a favorite quote, or a few sentences about your passion on social media using the hashtag .
