NATIONAL ROCKY ROAD DAY
National Rocky Road Day on June 2 celebrates the combination of chocolate ice cream, marshmallows, and nuts all in one! Whether you like Rocky Road ice cream in a bowl, on a cone, or straight out of the container, we know this delicious food holiday is going to be a big celebration.

Although Rocky Road comes in many variations, traditionally, the ice cream includes chocolate ice cream, nuts, and marshmallows. Today, there are variations with vanilla ice cream, chocolate chips, and almonds.

People have been enjoying this delicious combination for many years. There are varying accounts of the origin of this ice cream, as there often is with the creation of something new. Sometime during the late 1920s, William Dreyer used inspiration from his partner Joseph Edy's chocolate candy to make rocky road ice cream. Dryer did something he was probably told a hundred times not to do. He used his wife's sewing scissors to chop up marshmallows and walnuts and added them to chocolate ice cream. Of course, it tasted good, so he was probably forgiven for using her good sewing shears for anything but fabric!

Another who laid claim to the creation of rocky road ice cream was George Farren. He had simply blended a candy bar into chocolate ice cream creating the creamy dessert.

NATIONAL NAIL POLISH DAY | JUNE 1
On June 1st we celebrate National Nail Polish Day in hopes this celebration primes you with every shade under the sun. It's time to show off your toes and enjoy the summertime!

From the French manicure to elaborate nail art, nail polish has come a long way since the bees’ wax and gum Arabic used by the Chinese around 3,000 B.C. Egyptians in high societies used reddish brown henna to paint their nails. Through the years, nail polish has gone through several transformations. Around the nineteenth century, people began polishing their nails with tinted powders and pastes. They also buffed their fingernails to make them shiny.

Who invented nail polish? Northam Warren invented nail polish in 1911. As a known chemist, Warren first developed a liquid to remove dead cuticles without having to cut or scrape them. By 1916, he his invention led to the creation of a colorless nail polish.

In 1920 a makeup artist by the name of Michelle Menard developed brush-on varnishes that had the same properties as automobile paint. The improvements of Menard's formula were especially popular with flappers throughout the 1920s who would paint their nails with the varnish. By 1932, Menard began her own cosmetic company, selling nail polish in a variety of colors. The company sold this new and improved type of nail polish at drugstores and department stores throughout the country. Since then, millions of women have painted their nails on a regular basis.

Not So Secret Facts
Why do people polish their nails? People polish their nails because it makes their hands look more attractive. Painting your nails also protects them for breakage. Others paint their nails to enjoy the relaxation that accompanies getting their nails done. With so many colors to choose from, nail polish is also a marvelous way to accessorize or accentuate an outfit.

Do nail polish colors signify different events? Some people choose to wear a certain color of nail polish to match the season or their mood. And, there is also a shade or hue for every occasion. Vibrant reds, turquoises, and plums make summer nails shine during beach parties and weekend barbecues. The understated style of pale pinks and beiges, or a subtle moss, help women look workweek chic. For those elegant evenings, or just to make a statement, nail polish adds gold, silver and sparkle to even the most economic wardrobe.

While certain nail polish colors come and go, there are those that will never go out of style. For the last several years, the following nail polish colors have stood the test of time:

Jet black
Cherry red
Cool blue
Light lavender
Fine wine
Pure white
Chocolate brown
Iridescent rainbow
Nearly neon orange
Blackberry

Timeline Tidbits
In 1934, nail polish was often referred to as lacquer and cost 35 cents a bottle.

A bottle of nail polish costs anywhere from $2 to $25 today.

The most expensive nail polish in the world costs $250,000. This nail polish is made with black diamonds.

As opposed to only having three shades of red to choose from in the past, some companies make over 300 hundred different colors of nail polish. An opened bottle of nail polish only lasts a couple of years.

To maximize its shelf life, you should store your nail polish in a dry space at room temperature.

What are some unconventional uses for nail polish? Like most products, there are some unconventional uses for nail polish. For example, nail polish can be used to keep costume jewelry looking like new. Many people use it to stop a run or snag in your nylon stockings. Around the office, nail polish can be used to seal envelopes and color code your keyboard. At home, clear nail polish is used to threading a needle, stop a small tear in curtains and fill holes where pictures used to hang.

NATIONAL FLIP FLOP DAY
Each year on the Wednesday after Memorial Day, National Flip Flop Day encourages us to wear our favorite flip flops and show them off!

Flip flops are a lightweight footwear is designed to protect our tender feet from the hot ground and sand. These thong style sandals are by no means new to footwear. They’ve been around for thousands of years. However, the term “flip flop” has applied to flat-soled sandals with straps between the first and second toes and across the top of the foot since the 1960s. The term also describes someone who changes their mind or an electronic component.

National Flip Flop Day strictly recognizes the footwear that makes a flip-flopping sound as we walk, slapping the back of our feet as we head to the beach or make way for the pool. These sandals come in all shades and colors, beaded, bejeweled, and even bedazzled. Some are made of leather and cork. They’re also easy to remove and put on quickly making it easy to go to from the beach to a semi-formal dining event in an instant!

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL FLIP FLOP DAY
Flip Flop Day is the perfect time to go shopping for a new pair of flip flops. While you’re out and about, get a manicure, so you can show off your toes in your flip flops. Wear your favorite flip flops and use to share on social media.

NATIONAL WAITSTAFF DAY
National Waitstaff Day on May 21 recognizes the dedicated and often talented waitstaff. We encourage everyone to show appreciation to all waitstaff for making our dining experiences enjoyable. At the same time, restaurant owners and managers also recognize and express their appreciation for their team of waitstaff. After all, They help restaurants thrive.

Waitstaff, sometimes known as servers, are a big determining factor in the quality of your dining encounter. They serve as the communicator between the diner and the kitchen. While meeting the needs of several tables at once, they also represent the restaurant. Seasoned wait staff are knowledgeable and efficient. They are key to creating an extraordinary dining experience. The food may be delicious, but their attentiveness and attitude can make or change the whole experience.

Most waitstaff go out of their way to ensure you receive excellent service and ensure that you have the best time possible. They fill your drinks before you ask, bring extra bread, rolls or chips, give honest recommendations on food choices when asked, and are a valuable asset to any restaurant. Excellent servers turn diners into regulars who are known by name.

HOW TO OBSERVE National Waitstaff Day
We recognize our servers each time we enjoy a restaurant meal by leaving them a tip. If you receive stellar service, tell them you appreciate the excellent service they provided and leave a more generous tip. Continue to frequent the restaurant and don't hesitate to let the manager know just how well the waitstaff treated you. It doesn't matter if you're visiting a chain restaurant or a local favorite. Waitstaff deserve recognition for their stellar service, long hours on their feet, and smiling faces. Every restaurant owner knows their waitstaff are the face of their businesses.

Have you received out-of-this-world service? Give the restaurant and the server a shout-out. Use to post on social media.

NATIONAL JUICE SLUSH DAY
On the third Wednesday in May, National Juice Slush Day celebrates the icy delight that has come to be known as frozen juice slush.

A juice slush is an ice-based drink comprising of 100% fruit juice. As a frozen drink, basic flavors of strawberry, lime, grape and cherry seem to be the most common available. But, you can savor just about any flavor of juice you can get your hands on during National Juice Slush Day!

Historically, Royal courts from ages past used to bring down freshly fallen snow from mountain tops and spread crushed berries and mashed fruit on top. Little has changed. Billions of servings later the refreshing taste of icy fruit slush still thrills all ages, especially on National Juice Slush Day.

Commercially, the first slushy drink can be traced to a man by the name of Omar Knedlik. In the 1950s, after using parts from an automobile air conditioner, Knedlik built a rudimentary frozen beverage machine. As a result, the first slushies in the late 1950s and early 1960s were made by supercooling.

Supercooled Sprite was briefly marketed by Coca-Cola in the United Kingdom, but the product required a special vending machine to store the bottles. In 1966, 7-Eleven 7-Eleven made a licensing deal with The Icee Company to sell slushies in 7-Eleven stores. However, they would later call their frozen drink a Slurpee, which is nothing like a slushy.

Celebrate National Juice Slush Day by dancing in the sunshine like nobody’s watching. Sip on delicious juice slush and fire up some inspiration for that great American novel. Run, jump, or climb for the joy of it. Sing up to the stars between refreshing tastes or just chill poolside.

The world spins faster now. There just isn’t enough time to do everything that needs to be done. National Juice Slush Day dials back the pace and brings us to a more relaxed place. No Rush…Go Slush!
