Is your side activity a hobby…or a business?

Many people turn their passions into extra income but when it comes to taxes, how that activity is classified matters.

The IRS looks at several factors to determine whether an activity is a hobby (done for enjoyment) or a business (operated with the intent to make a profit). There’s no single deciding factor it's about the full picture.

Ask yourself:
✔ Are you trying to make a profit, and do you actually make one?
✔ Do you rely on this income for your livelihood?
✔ Are you keeping accurate books and operating like a business?
✔ Are you adjusting your approach to improve profitability?
✔ Do you have the knowledge or advisors to run it successfully?

Even if it’s a hobby, income is still taxable.
If you receive payments through apps, you may get a Form 1099-K, and digital asset payments may be reported on Form 1099-DA.

The bottom line: Whether it’s a hobby or a business, good recordkeeping is key, and proper classification can impact deductions and tax liability.

✔ Individuals: Up to 30% of installation costs, capped at $1,000 per item
✔ Businesses: Up to 6% of costs, capped at $100,000 per item
✔ Enhanced benefit: Businesses meeting prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements may qualify for the full 30% credit
