A final note about spring cleaning, let’s talk financial documents. You might have a folder (or a dining room table) full of:

• Bank and investment account statements,
• Insurance documents,
• Mortgage statements,
• Tax returns and supporting documentation,
• Health Savings Account spending receipts,
• Social Security income statements,
• Estate planning documents,
• Pay stubs...and more!!

The list can get long, and the paper can stack up! It’s a great time to go through your documents to organize what you need to hang on to, and shred what’s out of date. And if you find yourself receiving mail about accounts or policies that you never open, consider going paperless (where possible) to rely on electronic statements instead!

While we’re on the topic of spring cleaning, have you checked your account beneficiaries and estate plan recently? It’s easy to set-it-and-forget-it, but life happens and it’s important that your plans reflect your wishes.

-Estate plan: Review your most recent will or trust. If you’ve experienced any significant life changes since you created it, it may be time for an update! This goes beyond allocating assets, make sure that your healthcare directive and power of attorney documents are up to date too!

-Beneficiaries: Check your retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and bank accounts. Make sure your beneficiaries are who you want them to be and that the allocation of assets is aligned with your wishes.

-BONUS: do you know the difference between per stirpes and pro rata distributions to beneficiaries? A misunderstanding can make a big difference in the way your assets are distributed, so reach out to us for clarification!

Spring is in full swing and that means spring cleaning! Here’s a few tips to go beyond closet-decluttering and also clean up your finances.

1. Take inventory. Do you have life insurance policies, old retirement accounts, or even old bank accounts? Make sure you know where all these accounts are and their account/policy numbers!
2. Clean up subscriptions. This one’s easy! Go through your bank statements and check for recurring charges that you haven’t been using, from gym memberships to TV streaming! Remember that free trials sometimes turn into surprise expenses!
3. Check your automations. You might already have automatic systems in place for saving money or paying bills, but it’s a great time to make sure those systems are still right for you and your goals!
4. Call for help! There’s never a bad time for a check-in with your financial professional to make sure your plan is still a good fit for your situation.

Happy birthday to Blair! He joined his dad Marty here at West Invest nearly 10 years ago, and he’s been growing and developing the firm ever since.

A few things we appreciate about him:

- Always coming up with new ideas to improve client service and make our internal processes more efficient (we do our best to keep up)
- True “big brother” energy in the office. He never misses a chance for friendly jokes with the team
- A good sport when we manage to get a few jokes back at him
- Balances the humor with real support and guidance whenever it’s needed

Join us in wishing him a happy birthday!

Financial priorities shift throughout our lives. Here’s a few key stages people find themselves in. We won’t tie them to age, as everybody’s timeline is unique!

Building a Foundation: time to learn the basics and build good habits. This might look like:
- Creating a budget and managing cashflow,
- Starting or maintaining an emergency fund,
- Tackling high interest debt,
- Starting to invest in retirement accounts.

Growth Mode: time for some major purchases and risk management. This might look like:
- Reviewing, updating, or adding insurance policies,
- Basic estate planning,
- Setting or achieving short term goals like home purchases,
- Tackling longer term debt like student loans
- Re-examining your investments for both short and long term goals

The Final Stretch: time to close the gaps and make decisions. This might look like:
- Taking advantage of catch-up contributions,
- Getting familiar with potential retirement income sources
- Re-examining your investments for approaching goals and changing time horizons

Retirement: time to stick to your financial plan and arrange your legacy. This might look like:
- In-depth estate planning,
- Understanding new financial obligations and opportunities, like RMDs and QCDs,
- Developing and sticking to a plan to make your money last.

At every stage, we’re here to help.

Blair here, taking over our West Invest Facebook to wish Emily a happy birthday!!

Emily is our Operations and Compliance Specialist, but she’s also my little sister. She’s been working for West Invest for five years now and I depend on her as much as I pick on her.

It may have been a mistake to make her our compliance lead, because now she has a good reason to tell me what I can and can’t do. But really she does an amazing job of keeping us organized and compliant in a very strict industry and I’m grateful for that.

When she’s not bossing me around, she’s:
-Taking care of all the animals on her hobby farm (goats, turkeys, rabbits, quail, the list goes on...)
-Checking out an endless number of books at the library
-Hunting, fishing, or camping

Happy birthday Emily, all jokes aside I’m blessed we get to work together.
