Inheriting an IRA can feel confusing — not because of the money, but because of the rules that come with it.
What many people don’t realize is that they have more control over the taxes than they think.
The key is timing.
When you take withdrawals matters just as much as how much you take.
Some people save more by taking larger withdrawals during low‑income years, like early retirement. Others benefit from spreading withdrawals out to avoid jumping into a higher tax bracket. And if the original owner was already taking RMDs, that adds another layer of planning most beneficiaries aren’t expecting.
There’s no one strategy that works for everyone. The right approach depends on your income, retirement timeline, and long‑term goals.
If you’ve inherited an IRA, or might in the future, understanding your options early can make a meaningful difference in how much you keep.
