One thing I’ve learned while building Prairie Ledger Bookkeeping is that not every business fits into a “standard” bookkeeping package — especially startups and micro businesses.

Recently, I had a prospective client reach out and we went through the entire discovery process, only for both of us to realize my original packages simply were not startup or micro-business friendly. That conversation stuck with me.

I know what it feels like to make call after call searching for support, only to feel discouraged by pricing, dead ends, or the fear that no one truly understands where you are in your business journey. Tax Tip of the Week

I get this question a lot, so here’s a simple way to think about it:

Your business has three different “versions” of profit, and they don’t always match — and that’s actually normal.

Profit & Loss (P&L):
This shows how your business is performing. It’s your income minus expenses — basically, “did I make money this month?”

Tax Return Profit:
This is what you’re taxed on. The IRS has its own rules, so your CPA may adjust things to lower your taxable income. That’s why this number can look different from your P&L.

Cash Flow:
This is the actual money moving in and out of your bank account. Because you can be “profitable” on paper and still feel tight on cash (we’ve all been there).

Now here’s where it all comes together—

When you go to a bank for a loan, they don’t just look at one number. They look at all three to understand the full picture:
Are you profitable?
Do you actually have cash coming in?
Can you afford to pay them back?

And behind the scenes:
Your bookkeeper is keeping everything accurate and current,
so your CPA can plan ahead and make smart tax decisions.

So if your numbers don’t match perfectly, it doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong — but it’s definitely something you should understand.

Hi everyone — I wanted to check in since I’ve been a little quiet on here the past couple of weeks.

I’ve been dealing with a medical issue that reoccurred from my pregnancy last summer, and it’s required me to slow down and focus on getting through the pain and preparing for surgery this Wednesday (4/29). I’ll be down for about another week afterward while I recover.

I’ll still be checking emails and working as I’m able during this time. If you’ve reached out about having me review your books or sent an inquiry, I promise I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m healed and back up to speed.

Tonight was one of those “this is exactly why I started this” kind of moments.

I had the opportunity to attend a Wired Women Club meeting hosted by an incredible female-owned business, surrounded by a room full of driven women who are not only building their own businesses—but also investing in real estate together to grow long-term wealth. Every woman in that room brought a different background, different experience, and a shared mindset: helping each other win.

I showed up representing Prairie Ledger Bookkeeping, but also with a bigger purpose—continuing to build a strong, trustworthy network for my clients. Because good bookkeeping isn’t just about clean numbers… it’s about creating opportunities. ‼️Tuesdays Tax Tip of the Week ‼️

If you’re a small business owner thinking about hiring someone to “help in the office,” let’s break that down for a second.

$20/hour sounds reasonable, right?
That’s $41,600 a year in wages alone.

Now add:
• Employer taxes (8.35%) → $3,473
• Health insurance → $4,800
• Software & equipment → $1,500

You’re at $51,374 per year… or about $4,281/month.

And at $20/hour, you’re likely getting entry-level support — someone who can follow directions, enter data, and complete tasks you assign. But they’re not proactively managing your numbers or helping you make smarter business decisions.

Now let’s talk about someone more experienced.
At $30/hour… you already know that number climbs fast.

Here’s the alternative most business owners don’t consider:

Outsourcing your accounting and back-office work to a professional firm can run $4,200–$6,000 annually — ‼️ still fully tax deductible‼️

For that, you’re not getting one entry-level person.
You’re getting access to a team. Systems. Experience. Strategy.
People who already know what to look for — without you having to train or manage them.
