🚗 Business owners: do you or your team drive a work ute or company car? The FBT rules for business vehicles are set to change from 1 April 2027.

📋 The proposed rules do away with counting days and keeping logbooks. Instead, each vehicle goes into one of six categories based on how it's used, each with a set rate.

🧮 We've summarised the changes and built a calculator so you can see how the numbers could look for your own vehicle and we offer a full FBT calculation service to help understand the real cashflow impact on your business.

Has your business had a big change in cashflow this financial year compared to the last? 🤔

Whether it's slower sales, fast growth, or unpredictable cash flow, IRD's standard provisional tax estimate could mean you're paying too much, or leaving yourself exposed.

The first provisional tax instalment for FY27 is due 28 August 2026.

Our Provisional Tax Check Service is designed for businesses exactly like yours:
✅ Reviews your actual year-to-date numbers - not IRD's guess
✅ Works out what you should genuinely pay vs. the standard estimate
✅ Gives tailored guidance for managing provisional tax going forward
✅ Includes check-ins at each instalment date throughout the year

It's one of the best tools for keeping a tight grip on your cashflow when your income isn't steady.

Do you have a company and wondering how to pay yourself? It's one of the most common questions we hear from business owners. Here's a quick breakdown:

— Wages (PAYE): —
✔️ You're treated as an employee of the business.
✔️ Wages are a deductible business expense.
✔️ PAYE tax, ACC levies, and KiwiSaver contributions are deducted as you go.
✔️ Comes with extra admin. Monthly IRD filing is mandatory.
✔️ Can be tough when you're starting out or cashflow is unpredictable, since PAYE is due each month regardless of what's come in.

— Drawings: —
📌 Money taken from the company for personal use.
📌 A flexible option when you're starting out and cashflow is uncertain.
📌 Not a business expense. Comes out of the company's equity.
📌 In most cases your accountant will balance this out with a shareholder salary at year end - which is a deductible expense. Owners issued a shareholder salary, pay tax on the figure at their personal rate e.g. 33%.

🤔 Which is better?
It depends on your business structure, financial goals, and tax situation. There's no one-size-fits-all answer. Check out our article for more details - link in the comments 👇

Have you seen the news about IRD cracking down on crypto traders?

In the past, Kiwis trading crypto assets could fly under the radar...but that era is over. IRD now receives data directly from the platforms Kiwis use, and they're cross-referencing it against what's actually being declared.

Letters are already going out to some of the 355,000 crypto users IRD has identified in NZ, and this is just the beginning.

Now's the time to get your records in order.

Crypto-assets are treated as a form of property for tax purposes and what people make from selling, trading or exchanging crypto-assets is taxable.
