Enjoy the last bank holiday before Christmas. 📅

Then tomorrow the year changes gear. September is when quotes start moving again, budgets get looked at properly, and everybody suddenly remembers all the things they parked back in July.

If getting your accounts, your books or your tax return sorted was one of those parked things, this is the week to pick it back up. We are back at our desks Tuesday morning. 📌

Have a good one. ✅

Minshall & Co have been advising businesses around Nantwich for over twenty years. 💼

In that time we have taken clients from their first ever invoice through to running a payroll, sat with people through HMRC enquiries that felt a lot worse than they turned out to be, and helped a fair few work out that it was finally time to wind down and retire comfortably.

That is the genuinely useful part of having been here a while. We have watched how these things play out, so when you are weighing something up, you are almost certainly not the first person to have asked us about it. 📌

Still here, still local, still answering our own phone. ✅

If you became self employed, started a side business, or began renting out a property at any point during the 2025/26 tax year, you have to tell HMRC. 📅

The deadline to register for self assessment is 5 October 2026.

Miss it and you can be charged a penalty worked out from the tax you owe, and that applies even if you go on to pay the tax itself in full and on time. It is one of the easiest penalties in the system to avoid and one of the most common ones to get caught by. ⏰

It takes very little to sort out and we can do it for you. Get it done now while it is a five minute job. ✅

Register before the deadline. We'll handle it.

Tax rules change constantly, and almost none of it is announced in a way an ordinary business owner would ever actually see. 📊

Thresholds shift. Allowances change. Something that was fine last year quietly is not this year, and nobody sends you a letter about it.

Our job is not only to file what already happened. It is to tell you what is changing while you can still do something about it. 📌

That is what David is describing there, and it is the part that genuinely saves people money. 💷

Hiring your first person is the point where a lot of sole traders suddenly meet an entirely new set of rules. 📋

You need to register as an employer with HMRC before the first payday, and that is not instant. You need to run payroll and report to HMRC on or before every single pay date. You need to check their right to work, sort a contract, and set up a workplace pension with auto enrolment. 💼

None of that is difficult. All of it has deadlines and penalties attached to it, which is a different thing.

Set it up properly once and it runs quietly in the background forever. Set it up badly and you will be unpicking it for a year. We will take the payroll side off you completely if you would rather never think about it again. ✅

Hiring soon? Talk to us before the first payday, not after it.

If you are self employed or you rent out property, the once a year tax return is on its way out. Instead of one submission after the year ends, you will send HMRC updates during the year, from digital records. 📊

This is not a future plan, it has already started. It applied from April 2026 where self employment or property income is over £50,000, and from April 2027 that threshold drops to £30,000. 📅

The people who will find this painful are the ones still working from a carrier bag of receipts every January. The people who will barely notice are the ones already keeping records as they go.

You do not need to panic about it. You do need to start before it is your turn rather than the week it lands. We will get you set up and handle the submissions. ✅

Ask us where you stand on MTD. It takes one phone call to find out.

Monthly PAYE and National Insurance for the period ending 5 August is due with HMRC by 22 August if you pay electronically. 📅

22 August 2026 is a Saturday.

That means the money needs to have **cleared** by Friday 21 August. Not left your account on the Friday, cleared into theirs. If you are still paying by post, your deadline is earlier again, 19 August. ⏰

Late payment picks up interest, and a pattern of late payments picks up penalties on top. It is a five minute job to put in the diary now and an expensive one to remember in September. 📌

Or hand payroll over entirely and stop watching the calendar.

The most common way people use an accountant: send everything over once a year, get the return filed, hear nothing until the same time next year. 📂

That works. It is also the least you can possibly get out of it.

The decisions that actually change what you pay happen during the year, not after it. Whether to buy the van now or wait until April. Whether to take money as salary or dividend. Whether that new contract quietly tips you over the VAT threshold. 💡

By the time a return is being filled in, every one of those choices has already been made. All we can do at that point is add it up. ✅

Ask us the question before you make the decision, not after. 01270 260600.

That pile of paper in the glovebox, the drawer and the bottom of your bag is not clutter. It is money. 🧾

Every business expense you forget to claim is money you have already spent and are never getting back. Fuel, parking, tools, software subscriptions, postage, mileage. Individually they all look too small to bother with. Across a full year they are really not.

You do not need a shoebox and a bad afternoon in January either. Photograph them as you go and hand us the lot. 📁

We will tell you what qualifies. That is the easy bit.

Send us the pile and we will sort out what counts.

Two things happen in August. Money coming in slows down, because your clients are away and nobody is signing anything off. Money going out does not slow down at all, because wages, rent, VAT and suppliers carry on regardless. 📊

Add staff holiday pay on top of that, and a perfectly healthy, profitable business can have a genuinely uncomfortable month.

That is not a profit problem. It is a timing problem, and timing problems are fixable if you can see them coming. A simple cash flow forecast shows you which weeks are tight, so you can chase an invoice early or move a payment before it becomes a scramble. 📈

If August feels tighter than it should, it is worth half an hour of someone looking at it properly. 💡

Book a cash flow chat and go into September knowing where you stand.
