PUB AND HOTEL BUSINESS RATES REVIEW

The Government has launched an independent review into how pubs and hotels are valued for business rates in England and Wales.

The review follows concerns after the 2026 revaluation, which came into effect on 1 April 2026. Median rateable values increased by 32.8% for pubs and 32.2% for hotels, compared with 15.4% across all sectors.

A property’s rateable value is one of the main factors used to calculate its business rates bill. For pubs and hotels, valuations can take into account factors such as trading performance, rents, and how comparable properties are valued.

The call for evidence closes on 16 October 2026.

LANDLORDS' TAX RECORDS UNDER SCRUTINY

HMRC is writing to some landlords after comparing information received from third parties with taxpayers’ existing tax records.
According to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the letters are being sent during August 2026.

HMRC says it receives information from sources including tenancy deposit schemes and is contacting people where this data appears inconsistent with information already held on their tax affairs.

UK ECONOMY GROWS: This economy was up 0.4% in the second quarter of 2026, maintaining a relatively solid pace despite higher energy prices and wider economic uncertainty.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics showed growth was in line with economists’ expectations, although it slowed from 0.6% in the first three months of the year. GDP rose by 0.3% in June alone, following no growth in May – revised down from an earlier estimate of 0.1%.

MAKING TAX DIGITAL: More than 500,000 self-employed people and landlords had signed up for Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax ahead of the first quarterly reporting deadline, according to HMRC.

However, that still left an estimated 364,000 taxpayers, more than 4 in 10 of those expected to be within scope, unregistered before the 7 August deadline.

CHANCELLOR SETS BUDGET DATE: John Healey has confirmed that his first Budget will be delivered on Wednesday 28 October 2026, giving him 89 days to prepare the Government’s next major fiscal statement.

The announcement was made on 31 July, 11 days after Healey replaced Rachel Reeves as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Andy Burnham became Prime Minister on the same day, with the new administration moving quickly to establish its economic priorities.

In a video message, Healey said the Government was working quickly to restore hope and support communities. He described the forthcoming statement as a Budget that would move “money and power out of Westminster” while being built on “fiscal discipline”.

HMRC wrote off or abandoned £12.8 billion in unpaid tax, penalties and other debts during 2025/26, according to its latest annual report and accounts.

The total was 77% higher than the £7.2bn recorded in 2024/25. It represented 1.4% of all tax receipts, up from 0.8% a year earlier, despite HMRC collecting a record £938bn and reporting a record compliance yield of £50.2bn.

BUSINESS RATES CUT FOR HOSPITALITY

Pubs, clubs and live music venues across England will receive a 20% cut in business rates from April next year, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced.

The measure is intended to give hospitality businesses more breathing space as they face rising operating costs. It follows a 15% reduction announced in January and is expected to benefit around 32,000 businesses.

The Government estimates that a typical pub will save approximately £1,100 a year.

Our summer walk took us around Gradbach Mill and Luds Church - roughly 10 miles southwest of Buxton. Nestled within the Staffordshire side of the Peak District, the terrain was often steep and tricky but we were greeted with stunning views.

With support from each other, the five-mile route passed with plenty of laughs. A fantastic day spent enjoying the great outdoors, recharging the batteries and strengthening team spirit. Here's to the next adventure! 🥾🌿
