ELECTRIC CARS: The UK Government is preparing to review how quickly car makers must shift towards electric vehicle sales.

Under the current Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, 80% of all new cars sold in the UK must be electric by 2030. That target rises gradually each year, from 28% in 2025 to 33% in 2026, before reaching 80% at the end of the decade.

However, car manufacturers and trade unions have urged ministers to ease the rules, warning that the current timetable could put pressure on costs, production and jobs.

INTEREST RATES & INFLATION

UK inflation fell to 2.8% in the year to April, down from 3.3% in March, although it remains above the Bank of Englandโ€™s 2% target. The fall was larger than expected and was largely driven by lower household energy bills following a reduction in the Governmentโ€™s energy price cap.

While inflation has fallen significantly from the 11.1% peak recorded in October 2022, prices are still rising at a slower rate. Core inflation, which excludes more volatile items such as food and energy, also eased to 2.5% in April from 3.1% the previous month.

However, the outlook remains uncertain. Rising global energy costs, linked to tensions in the Middle East, are expected to put renewed pressure on inflation over the coming months.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to announce a package of measures to help households manage rising costs linked to the economic impact of the Iran conflict.

A central feature of the package is free bus travel for children aged 15 and under in August. The initiative forms part of a wider programme branded the โ€œGreat British Summer Savings Schemeโ€ which the Treasury says is intended to help families through the school holidays.

GROWTH: The UK economy grew unexpectedly in March, despite the early impact of the war in Iran.

Gross domestic product rose by 0.3%, beating forecasts of a small contraction. The Office for National Statistics said some consumers and businesses appeared to bring forward spending because they feared higher prices later in the year.

Retailers reported stronger fuel sales as motorists stocked up in response to sharp price rises, while some businesses told the ONS that activity had been pulled into March ahead of expected cost increases linked to the conflict.

TRAVEL: Holidaymakers are being told not to change their travel plans over concerns about jet fuel supplies, with the UK Government saying there is currently no shortage and contingency plans are in place.

Airlines have cut around 13,000 flights worldwide in May as jet fuel prices rise sharply following the conflict in the Middle East. However, this represents about 1% of global flights, and services to and from the UK are largely unaffected.

Aviation analytics firm Cirium said Munich and Istanbul were among the worst-hit destinations, but UK airlines, airports and travel agents have said flights are operating as normal.

PUBS CALL TIME: Around two British pubs closed every day in the first quarter of 2026, according to new industry figures.

The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) said 161 pubs shut across England, Scotland and Wales between January and March, putting around 2,400 jobs at risk.

The Government introduced extra business rates support earlier this year after warnings that further tax changes could force more venues to close. A 15% relief for pubs and music venues came into effect last month.

LANDLORDS: HMRC has warned to stop using a promoted tax avoidance scheme that claims to reduce property tax bills by bypassing mortgage interest relief restrictions.

The arrangement, described as a hybrid business model, is being marketed as a way for landlords to restructure their property businesses and increase mortgage interest deductions. HMRC says the scheme does not work and could leave landlords facing extra tax, interest, penalties and professional fees.

FUEL DRIVES INFLATION

UK inflation rose to 3.3% in the year to March, up from 3% in February, with higher fuel prices the main driver behind the increase. According to the Office for National Statistics the rise was largely linked to a sharp jump in petrol and diesel costs, while food prices and air fares also added to the pressure.

The figures offer the first official indication of how conflict in the Middle East is feeding into the UK cost of living. Since the war involving Israel, the US and Iran began on 28 February, wholesale energy prices have risen sharply as production and transport across the region have been disrupted by missile strikes and drone attacks.

Over the year, fuel prices were up 4.9%, the highest annual rise since January 2023.

ENERGY COSTS: More UK businesses are set to receive support with rising energy costs, after the Government confirmed it will expand a scheme first outlined in 2025.

Around 10,000 energy-intensive manufacturers, including firms in steel, automotive and pharmaceuticals, could see electricity bills reduced by up to 25%. The original plan covered 7,000 companies, meaning a further 3,000 have now been brought into scope.

The expanded British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS) is intended to ease pressure from volatile oil and gas prices, which recently surged amid geopolitical tensions. While prices have since eased, energy costs remain significantly higher than those faced by competitors in Europe and the US.
