Missed Friday? You are not in trouble, but do not leave it.

What happens: nothing immediately. No penalty points for a late quarterly update in 2026/27.

What matters: it still needs filing. Your final return for the year cannot be submitted until all four quarterly updates are in, and quarter two is already running.

Do it this week and you are back on track with a clean run to 7 November.

Two dates worth writing down.

6 April to 5 July is the period your first MTD update covers.
7 August is when it is due.

Anything you spent or earned after 5 July belongs in the next quarter, not this
one. That one detail saves a lot of confusion.

Six things between you and a finished first quarter.

Number 4 is the one that catches people out. Being mandated for MTD and
being signed up for MTD are two different things, and HMRC will not do it for
you.

Most people get this wrong before August.
