HMRC owes you money?

Left a job mid-year and haven’t worked since? You’ve probably overpaid tax.

PAYE assumes you’ll earn all year and spreads your tax-free allowance across 12 months, so stopping in August means you’ve paid tax on months of income you never got.

A P50 gets it back, and you could claim up to 4 years back.

(Exception: if you’re claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance or ESA, the Jobcentre sorts it automatically when your claim ends, no P50 needed.)

Know someone who left their job this year? Save this and send it to them.

Earn ÂŁ70k with one child? HMRC might already be taking half your Child Benefit back.

Here’s the fix, pension contributions can bring your adjusted net income back under £60k, meaning you keep 100% of your Child Benefit and claim extra higher-rate tax relief.

Salary trap season 🚨 Five numbers HMRC hopes you never learn.

From the ÂŁ12,570 starting line to ÂŁ125,140 where your Personal Allowance disappears completely, these thresholds decide how much of your hard-earned money you actually keep.

Confused about VAT? Let’s clear it up.

You must register for VAT once your taxable turnover exceeds ÂŁ90,000 in any rolling 12-month period. Miss it, and HMRC can backdate the missed VAT, plus interest and penalties.

But here’s what most people miss: you can register voluntarily, even if you’re under the £90k threshold.

Nobody claims all 6 of these. Not because they’re hard to get because nobody tells directors they exist.

If you’re running a Limited Company and your accountant hasn’t walked you through trivial benefits, staff party allowances, or company pension contributions… it might be time for a chat.

Many people still believe property is the best way to build wealth.

Sometimes it is.

But how you hold it can have a huge impact on your returns.

In this example:
• Rental income: £18,000
• Mortgage interest: £12,000
• Profit: £6,000
• Tax bill (via limited company): £1,140–£1,500
• Amount kept: £4,500–£4,860

This is why understanding how different structures are taxed matters.

It’s also one reason more landlords are moving property into a limited company.

Ever wondered where your tax money actually goes? đź‘€

Every single pound you pay in tax gets carved up and sent somewhere and the results might surprise you.

The biggest slice? Welfare and benefits — 28p of every £1.
The NHS takes 20p. Education 10p. And by the time you add it all up… it’s gone.

Whether that makes you feel better or worse about your tax bill we’ll let you decide.

What surprised you most? Drop it in the comments. 👇
