It’s Monday. Somewhere, someone is rereading a rejection email that says nothing.

“Thank you for your interest. Unfortunately...”

No reason. No feedback. Just a polite door, closed.

So they do what ambitious people do. They rewrite the CV. They apply to ten more. They tell themselves it’s the degree, the grades, the name on the application.

And quietly, a worse thought creeps in: maybe I’m not what they’re looking for.

Here’s what that email never tells you: the problem often isn’t talent. It’s that nobody ever showed you what the other side of the process looks like. Or showed you a room where people who look like you were already in it.

So we’re building that room.

“It started on a Thursday evening in November.”

A year from now, someone will tell this story at a dinner table, in an interview, or to a younger cousin deciding what to do next.

They almost didn’t go. It was a weeknight and they didn’t know anyone there. They weren’t sure they’d “fit.”

But they went. They walked into Vodafone’s Global HQ in London and found a room full of people who wanted to meet them: leaders, early-career colleagues who’d walked the same road a few steps earlier, and the Talent Acquisition and Early Careers teams.

They asked the question they’d been carrying for weeks. And someone answered it honestly.

They heard how people got in, how they grew, and what the culture is actually like. They met someone working in a team they hadn’t known existed. They left with new connections, a sharper sense of where they could fit, and a head start before applications opened in January.

Nothing dramatic happened. Just one evening where a company stopped being a logo and became people.

That evening is Thursday 19 November.

BYP Network and Vodafone are opening the room for high-potential Black talent. The only part of the story we can’t write for you is whether you walk in.

“Tell me about yourself.”

Four words. Zero idea where to start.

It’s the question that turns brilliant candidates into narrators of their entire life story, starting somewhere around primary school.

So how do you get it right?

Yesterday, one of the BYP Accelerators showed us in a mock interview with VodafoneThree.

They grew up across different cultures, and that sparked a fascination with international teams and the energy industry. So they studied chemical engineering, then spent three years in process engineering getting hands-on with the technical side.

Now they want more: energy consultancy, commercial strategy and policy.

Past, present, next. Each part led to the one after it.

That’s not a CV. That’s a story. And it works because the interviewer doesn’t have to guess why this role makes sense. They’re already thinking, “of course.”

Shakira Moise and Katie McKenna Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Leads at VodafoneThree, ran the interviews and facilitated the session, giving the participants personalised feedback on delivery, confidence and owning their achievements.

💡 No corporate job yet? Volunteering, student societies, part-time work and side projects all count.

🔍 Research beyond the company website. Know their priorities and show how yours connect.

💪 Stop disqualifying yourself. Don’t downplay your wins or lead with what you lack.

All 4 participants got personalised feedback on delivery, confidence and owning their achievements. Practice, not theory.

Your CV tells employers what you’ve done. Your story tells them why it matters.

“Tell me about yourself.”

Five words. One question. Suddenly, you’ve forgotten half the things you wanted to say.

You know you’re capable. You’ve done the coursework, gained the experience, prepared your CV and finally secured an interview. Then the interviewer asks you to introduce yourself, and you find yourself listing your qualifications instead of telling them why they should hire you.

Sound familiar?

The problem isn’t always a lack of experience. Sometimes, it’s knowing how to communicate your value when it matters most.

Today, we’re tackling this head-on in an exclusive Interview Preparation Workshop with VodafoneThree, as part of cohort 2 of the BYP Network Career Ready Accelerator.

We’re joined by Shakira Moise and Katie McKenna, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Leads at VodafoneThree, for a session focused on navigating interviews with greater confidence, communicating your strengths and making a stronger impression.

We’re also putting theory into practice with mock interviews based on real job opportunities at VodafoneThree. Our Accelerators will have the opportunity to step into the interviewee’s seat and practise making their case for a role.

Knowing you can do the job is one thing. Convincing an employer to give you the opportunity is another.
