🇬🇧 JK biudžetas 2026 – kas keisis nuo 2027 m. balandžio? 💷

🇬🇧 Autumn Budget 2026 – what could it mean for your business?

Another Budget, another round of tax changes! 💷

There's quite a lot to take in, so I've picked out a few announcements that could be particularly relevant to small businesses and self-employed people.

🚗 Business mileage – The Budget information outlines increases to mileage allowance rates, including a higher rate for business miles above 10,000 from April 2027.

🏪 Small business rates relief – More retail, hospitality and leisure properties could qualify for relief from April 2027, with higher rateable-value thresholds.

🧾 VAT and overseas services – Changes are planned to the VAT reverse charge rules from April 2027.

💻 Electronic invoicing – VAT e-invoicing requirements are planned from April 2029. Another step towards a more digital tax system!

🏦 PAYE and VAT payments – From April 2029, businesses are expected to be required to have a Direct Debit instruction in place with HMRC, although other payment methods would remain available.

🔬 R&D tax relief – The claim notification process is set to be simplified from April 2027.

The important thing to remember is that not all these changes take effect immediately. Some are planned for 2027, others for 2028 or 2029, and further guidance is still to come.

I'll be keeping an eye on the details and sharing the changes that actually matter to small businesses.

💙 I've been a bit quiet on here lately… but definitely not because I've had nothing to do! 😊

Most days you'll find me in the office, working with numbers, preparing accounts and looking after my clients.

But last weekend I swapped my desk for a microphone and a stage! 🎤🇱🇹

Some of you may know that, alongside running Right Accounts, I'm also the Chairperson of the Leeds Lithuanian Community. Last weekend we celebrated our 15th anniversary! 🎉

I've been part of the community for 14 years now, and it's become a huge part of my life. My children have grown up with it, and over the years we've made so many friendships and wonderful memories.

Organising the celebrations has taken months of work. Lots of evenings, weekends, emails, phone calls and the usual last-minute problems to sort out! 😄

It's all voluntary, but I do it because I genuinely care about keeping our Lithuanian culture, language and traditions alive here in the UK.

And of course, while all this was happening, Right Accounts didn't stop! There were still clients to look after, accounts to prepare and deadlines to meet.

I'm not quite sure how I managed to fit everything in, to be honest! 😂

That's one thing about running your own business. The flexibility is wonderful, but sometimes it feels like you're trying to squeeze 30 hours into a 24-hour day.

And when things get really busy, something has to give. This time, it was social media.

I'm so proud of what we've achieved as a community and grateful to everyone who helped make the celebrations happen. And I'm just as grateful to my Right Accounts clients for their continued trust and support. 💙

Now it's back to a slightly more normal routine (although I'm not sure I know what normal looks like anymore!).

Any other small business owners out there who feel like they're constantly juggling ten things at once? 😊

Congratulations to our dear clients Bar hashery york with this great achievement! Very well deserved! ❤️

💻 Today’s Right Accounts office looks a little different… 🇪🇸
This morning I’m working from a hotel in Valencia. Laptop open, emails answered and a few jobs to finish before the weekend properly begins.
I’m not actually here for work though! 😊
I’m in Valencia with Vėtrungė, our Lithuanian folk-dance group from Leeds, for a weekend of dancing, meeting Lithuanian dancers from Spain and, hopefully, enjoying a little Spanish sunshine. 🇱🇹💃☀️
One of the things I really appreciate about running my own business is the flexibility. Most days Right Accounts is my office in Garforth – today, for a few hours, it’s a table in a Valencia hotel.
Laptop will be closing shortly though. This weekend is for dancing! 💃
Anyone else working from a slightly unusual “office” today? 😊

💡 TAX TIP FRIDAY

Five documents every business owner should keep 📁

Good records make bookkeeping easier – and could save you problems if HMRC ever asks questions.

Make sure you keep:

1️⃣ Sales invoices & income records
2️⃣ Purchase invoices & receipts
3️⃣ Bank & credit card statements
4️⃣ Payroll & pension records
5️⃣ HMRC & important business documents

💡 And you don't need boxes full of paperwork!

With QuickBooks or Xero, you can upload receipts and invoices, match them to transactions and keep your records digitally in one place.

No more wondering six months later: “What was that £87 payment for?” 😊

At Right Accounts, we work with both QuickBooks and Xero and can help you get your bookkeeping organised.

📩 Still keeping receipts in a shoebox? Maybe it's time to go digital.

💡 TAX TIP FRIDAY

Can my business pay for my eye test and glasses? 👓

If you’re an employee or director and regularly use a computer or other screen for work, your employer may be able to provide a qualifying eye test tax and NI-free.

What about glasses?

✔ Special glasses needed specifically for screen/VDU work? They may also qualify.

❌ Your normal everyday prescription glasses or contact lenses? Usually not – even if you wear them while working.

From 6 April 2026, the exemption has also been extended to qualifying eye-test costs reimbursed by the employer, provided the conditions are met.

So remember: your business paying for your glasses doesn't automatically make them tax-free.

📩 Not sure what your company can pay for? Speak to Right Accounts – we'll help you get it right.

💡 TAX TIP FRIDAY

Haven't sorted out Making Tax Digital yet? You may soon hear from HMRC.

If you're self-employed or receive property income and your qualifying income was over £50,000 in 2024/25, you should already be using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax from April this year.

But I know there are still plenty of people who haven't registered.

If that's you, don't assume that because you haven't done anything, MTD doesn't apply to you.

From September, HMRC will start automatically registering people who, according to their records, should already be in MTD.

And here's the important bit:

HMRC registering you doesn't mean HMRC sorts everything out for you.

You'll still need to check the information they hold about your business or property income, start keeping digital records and use MTD-compatible software.

And because MTD started back in April, you may also need to catch up from 6 April 2026.

The first quarterly update was due on 7 August, so for some people there will already be records and submissions to catch up with.

The good news is that HMRC has confirmed there will be no penalty points for missed quarterly updates during 2026/27.

But please don't take that as a reason to leave it until January. 😊

If you're sitting there thinking:

“I have no idea whether this applies to me…”

or

“I know it applies to me, but I haven't done anything yet…”

📩 Get in touch with Right Accounts.

We'll check where you stand and help you get everything set up and caught up properly.

💡 TAX TIP FRIDAY

“I bought a gift for a client, so I can claim it.”
Not always.

In most cases, business gifts aren’t tax deductible.

There is a small exception for promotional items if they:

✔ show a clear business advert
✔ cost £50 or less per person per year
✔ are not food, drink, to***co or vouchers

Examples that may qualify: branded pens, mugs, notebooks.

But:

❌ Alcohol, restaurant vouchers, or personal gifts are usually not allowable
❌ The £50 limit is per person per year (not per gift)

Also, VAT rules can apply if you go over the limit.

So don’t assume a business gift is automatically tax deductible.

📩 Unsure? Speak to Right Accounts before you buy.

💡 Tax Tip Friday
Can my spouse work in my business?

Yes – they can.

But there are some important rules to follow.

If your spouse genuinely works in your business, you can usually employ them and pay them a salary.

However:

✔ They must actually carry out work for the business.

✔ The salary must be reasonable for the work they do.

✔ You should keep records of the work performed, just as you would for any other employee.

Whether it's bookkeeping, administration, answering calls, marketing or helping with day-to-day tasks, the work must be real and the pay must reflect the duties.

If you're employing your spouse, you'll also need to consider:

• Payroll and PAYE reporting.

• National Insurance.

• Pension auto-enrolment (where applicable).

Simply paying your spouse to reduce your tax bill, without them doing any genuine work, is not acceptable.

📩 Thinking about employing your spouse in your business?

Speak to Right Accounts first. We'll help you set everything up correctly and make sure you stay compliant with HMRC.
