What difference can an exchange rate really make? Potentially quite a lot. 🌍

Take someone transferring $500,000 from the US to Spain.

At $1 = €0.92, that would be worth around €460,000.

At $1 = €0.87, it would be around €435,000.

A relatively modest movement in the rate has changed the outcome by €25,000.

That could represent part of a property deposit, several years of living expenses, or simply capital you would rather have retained.

This is why currency should form part of the planning when moving, investing or transferring significant sums internationally.

A few days on the road, visiting existing and new clients in Valencia and Barcelona! 🇪🇸☀️

Valencia certainly had plenty going on — managed to time my visit perfectly with a protest in the city centre 😅 Never a dull moment!

Barcelona was a little more relaxed, with some fantastic views over the city. Both client meetings happened to be on rooftop terraces in lovely locations, which certainly makes a change from the usual meeting room!

One of the things I enjoy most about this job is getting out and meeting the people we work with. It’s always great to put aside the emails and phone calls and have a proper face to face.

And with places like these on our doorstep, there are certainly worse ways to spend a working week!

How do you know when you have enough to retire? 💭

A useful starting point is to work out what you actually want your retirement to look like.

Think about where you want to live, when you would ideally stop working, the lifestyle you want to maintain and any larger expenses you have planned.

Once you have a clearer picture of your goals, you can work out what they are likely to cost and assess whether your existing wealth could support them.

If you receive your retirement income in pounds but spend most of your money in euros, changes in exchange rates could affect how much you have available each month. 💷

For example, a £30,000 annual pension would be worth €36,000 at an exchange rate of £1 to €1.20.

If the rate changed to £1 to €1.10, that same pension would be worth €33,000.

Your income in pounds hasn't changed, but your spending power in Spain has.
