A client presents a complex tax or legal matter that falls outside your firm’s usual service line.

Turning the work away means losing the opportunity. Attempting it without the right expertise creates risk. Referring the client elsewhere may weaken the relationship you have built.

There is another option.

Latita Africa works with accountants, tax practitioners, attorneys, financial advisers and other professional firms that require specialist tax, legal or advisory support.

You retain the client relationship. We provide the specialist capability. The matter is managed together with clear boundaries around the mandate, communication and client ownership.

The next time a client brings you a matter outside your core expertise, you do not have to say, “We don’t do that.”

You can say, “We can assist.”

A business can be profitable and still be unable to settle a large historical SARS debt without damaging its ability to trade.

Where the debt cannot realistically be recovered in full, the Tax Administration Act allows SARS, in qualifying circumstances, to compromise a portion of that debt.

A compromise is not automatic. It must make financial sense to SARS.

Latita Africa assesses the debt, the taxpayer's financial position and the available legal remedies before deciding whether compromise is the appropriate route.

Your tax debt doesn’t have to keep you grounded.

That SARS balance may look impossible to deal with, especially when you cannot afford to settle it in full. Before you assume there is no way forward, find out what options apply to you.

Depending on your circumstances, these may include a payment arrangement, a tax debt compromise or a formal dispute where there are grounds to challenge the assessment.

Latita Africa can review your tax position and financial circumstances, explain the available options and assist with the appropriate submission.

Think your SARS tax debt is impossible to resolve? Think again.

When SARS raises an additional assessment, practitioners naturally start with the numbers.

That is necessary, but it is not enough.

Before drafting an objection, establish exactly what has been assessed, what factual basis SARS relied on, which legal provisions SARS applied and whether the dispute is against an assessment or another decision.

Then preserve the procedure.

An objection generally has to be delivered within 80 business days. It needs sufficiently detailed grounds and the material necessary to support those grounds. If SARS disallows it, the appeal period is generally 30 business days.

At the same time, consider collection.

An objection does not by itself mean the taxpayer can ignore the assessed debt. Where appropriate, a separate section 164 suspension-of-payment application should be considered.

The assessment itself also matters later.

The March 2026 BASF judgment confirms that SARS cannot use its Rule 31 statement to replace the whole factual or legal foundation of the assessment with a fundamentally different case.

For practitioners, that makes the original audit findings, letter of assessment, reasons, objection and supporting documents part of the litigation file from day one.

A tax dispute should not begin with:

“What can we say to get SARS to reverse this?”

It should begin with:

“What exactly did SARS decide, on what basis, and what lawful procedural route gives the client the remedy they need?”

That distinction protects the merits of the client's case.
